Adam DeVine’s Accident: The Actor Almost Had His Legs Amputated after a Near-Fatal Collision

Movie star Adam DeVine nearly lost his legs after getting involved in an accident that almost killed him. The Hollywood star has since opened up about the incident.

Adam DeVine is a multi-talented show business star born November 7, 1983, in Waterloo, Iowa. He is married to actress Chloe Bridges whom he wed in 2021.

Although he has had a successful career, the road to acting and comedy would not have been a path he would have followed had he not been in a near-fatal accident when he was young.

DeVine is a producer and writer, unlike his wife, Chloe Bridges. He is one of the stars and the co-creators of the television sitcom, “Workaholics,” and “Adam Devine’s House Party.”

He is best known for his stints in the hit film musicals, “Pitch Perfect” and “Pitch Perfect 2.” He played Bumper alongside Rebel WilsonBrittany Snow, Elizabeth Banks, and Skylar Astin. He also had a recurring role in the classic “Modern Family.” Before the producer became famous, he endured early childhood trauma.

Adam DeVine Was Hit by a Truck as a Child & It Altered His Life

In October 2019, Adam DeVine appeared on the “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” and revealed that when he was 11 years old, he was hit by a cement truck. The incident occurred in Omaha, Nebraska, where he and his family had just relocated. It was the summer going into sixth grade, and he had just made new friends.

Young DeVine and his pals were headed to the convenience store when the unthinkable happened. One of his friends yelled, “Come on!” and he thought he was giving him the green light to cross the road while pushing a bicycle.

“I grew up in the suburbs so new houses were being built every day. Three cement trucks were going down the hill and two were coming down at the exact same time,” the singer explained.

“And so after the third one passed going up the hill on my side of the street, I walked out with my bicycle and was hit by the cement truck coming down the other side. Taken under the wheel and spit out,” DeVine continued.

Everything from his waist downwards was broken except for his right femur. “[…] Then crushed everything from the knees down and took it all my skin off,” he added.

Adam DeVine Was in an Induced Coma

The actor ended up in a medically-induced coma for two weeks. His lung collapsed, and doctors considered amputating his legs. He said he was in immense pain:

“It hurt a lot, even with all the drugs.”

DeVine’s parents found him at the hospital. His mother was out with her friends at the zoo, and she received a note at the concession stand (he said there were no cell phones at the time) instructing her to call a specific number, and that is how they learned about his hospitalization.

Meanwhile, his father was at home asleep after working the night shift. He was called on the home telephone number, but he did not pick up and let it go to the voice machine. However, once he heard what the person on the other end of the phone had to say, he rushed to the hospital to see his son.

Adam DeVine Underwent over 20 Surgeries & Had to Relearn How to Walk

DeVine revealed he underwent 26 surgeries from 6th grade until his first year of high school. Moreover, he could not walk and spoke more about the experience during his appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in October 2019:

“I had to relearn how to walk. [..] And it was a two-year process to gain my strength back in my legs and learn how to walk again. I lost the muscle, and I shattered everything from my knees down, and I had to fully relearn.”

Nonetheless, DeVine fully recovered and avoided the possibility of losing his legs. The actor credits the unfortunate incident for getting into comedy. Following the incident, he had to use a wheelchair, and people made fun of him.

His dad advised him to use words to defend himself since he could not do it physically. He told him to think of funny stuff to say to them. He heeded and ran with the advice; no one could touch him then.

DeVine now supports Children’s Miracle Network Hospital after going through such a traumatic experience in his childhood. In November 2017, he took to his Instagram and retold his story to his followers, sharing his hospital experience alongside a throwback photo of him on the hospital bed.

The actor, who starred alongside Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in “The Intern,” urged his followers to donate to CMN to help kids with terminal illnesses and life-altering injuries.
