Doctor on TikTok gives top tip on how to fall asleep quickly after learning simple exercise.

Life can get pretty stressful from time to time, so being able to switch your brain off and get some good sleep is often needed.

But there is nothing more frustrating than when the to sleep comes around after a long day and you simply can’t doze off.

Some people suggest doing some pushups, having shower or even counting sheep to help you drift off but sometimes it simply doesn’t work.

Well, a Denver doctor on social media has said he has a simple exercise people can do and when he discovered it, he considered it a game changer.

Dr Scott Walter, shared his video on his @DenverSkindoc TikTok page last week and has received a heap of thank yous from previously sleepless viewers.

“I am a doctor and sometimes I have trouble falling asleep and I am going to tell you about the method that was like a light switch moment for me once I learned it,” he said in the video.

“No, it doesn’t involve taking like melatonin or other supplements, it doesn’t involve taking a hot shower before bed or even reading or something like that.

“It is a simple mental exercise we call cognitive shuffling, have you heard of it?”

Walter then continued to explain how the exercise works and how it can easily put you off to sleep in minutes, rather than tossing and turning in bed for hours.

He continued: “It’s a way to reorganize your thoughts, similar to shuffling a deck of cards. Basically distracting your mind from conscious thought patterns that may keep you awake.

“One way to do it is to just think of random words or objects that have nothing to do with each other.”

So, I suppose like the opposite of a word association, random association I suppose would be a good name for the exercise.

Walter then explained a second way you can do this exercise and achieve the same goal.

He continued: “If you don’t like random, there’s another method, first you pick a letter of the alphabet. Secondly you start counting your heartbeat then every eight beats you think of a word that begins with that letter.

“In addition to distracting your brain, cognitive shuffling mimics what are called micro dreams which occur during the transition to sleep. It let’s your brain know its safe to fall asleep now.”
