Dancer goes viral for ‘hilariously ridiculous’ performance at Olympic breakdancing event

A breakdancer’s performance gave hope to everyone wanting to enter the Olympics.

A ‘hilariously ridiculous’ Olympic breakdancer has gone viral after admitting she didn’t meet the skill level of her competitors.

Breakdancing is a completely new event added to the Olympics as of this year, and it has definitely given people something to talk about.

The judges mark the dancer’s performances according to six criteria, consisting of – creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity and musicality.

The judges submit their votes after each round, and the breaker with the highest points is declared the winner.

But Australia’s Rachael Gunn became overnight meme after her performance at the Paris 2024 games, which saw her pull some questionable moves out of the locker.

Gunn, 36, didn’t quite meet the skill level her opponents, but noted that her dance was more about ‘creativity’ than it was tricky moves.

In an interview following the competition, the dancer – also known as Raygun – said: “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best – their power moves.

“What I bring is creativity.”

According to her Olympics bio, alongside being a breakdancer Gunn is a university lecturer at Macquarie University with a Ph.D. in cultural studies.

Dance is listed as one of her research interests.

Commenting on her performance, one person on X said: “I kinda feel bad for RayGun, the Aussie [breaker] — but that routine was hilariously ridiculous.

“Something like this always happens at the Olympics.”

Another added: “I’d like to personally thank Raygun for making millions of people worldwide think ‘huh, maybe I can make the Olympics too’.”

And a third joked that she needed to take a ‘break’ from dancing…ouch.

Others likened her performance to themselves dancing after they had a few too many to drink.

One said: “SO embarrassing for us Australians. I just had to laugh because I could do that. Probably did when I was young and had a few drinks.”

Others, however, had nice things to say about her performance.

One said: “Honestly though Raygun you have made my day. I genuinely have been smiling all morning.”

But it wasn’t just her dancing that people had things to say about.

According to the New York Post, the International Olympic Committee allowed competitors to wear their custom uniform, which had to be submitted before competition.

Gunn was the only athlete who wore a tracksuit representing her country.

Following backlash, she took to Instagram and said: “Looking forward to the same level of scrutiny on what the boys wear tomorrow.”
