Mike Tyson receives new heavyweight world ranking after losing to Jake Paul

The veteran boxer was the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1999

Mike Tyson probably won’t be shouting his new heavyweight ranking from the rooftops.

Tyson returned to the ring last week for his first professional fight in almost two decades and went head-to-head against Jake Paul.

The veteran boxer is 31 years Paul’s senior, and at times, it showed.

Tyson only landed 18 punches in the match, compared to Paul’s 78 successful connections.

With these figures in mind, it’ll probably come as no surprise that the YouTuber-turned-boxer won the fight. He failed to knock out Tyson though, but still went on to be crowned winner from the judge’s scorecards.

In light of his recent defeat, Tyson – who was once the undisputed world heavyweight champion – has drastically gone down in the world rankings.

Almost 40 years on from his boxing debut in 1985, Tyson, 58, entered 309th in the latest BoxRec heavyweight rankings, as per The Express. This puts him 183 places behind 27-year-old Paul.

While his current positioning in the tables is a far cry from his prime, it doesn’t detract from Tyson’s impressive record.

As per BoxRec, Tyson’s had 50 wins over the course of his decades-long career, 44 of which he won by knock out. He’s also had seven losses, his most recent being to Paul.

Following their highly anticipated match, both Tyson and Paul have been slapped with suspensions.

This is short-lived however, as it will only last 24 days.

The forced break came through an order from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversaw the fight in Arlington. It ensures that both fighters have time to physically recover from the heavyweight boxing match.

As per the rules, boxers have to undergo a mandatory three-day rest for every round they fought.

Because Paul and Tyson went all eight rounds, it means they have to rest for the full 24 days.

Following his win over Tyson, Paul penned a heartfelt statement to his opponent on social media.

He said: “Thank you to every fighter on the card last night, thank u Netflix, thank u Jerry Jones, thank u to my MVP team, thank u to the legend Mike Tyson for giving me a chance to share the ring with him, thank u to my family and close circle of friends..and above all, thank you God.”

Elsewhere, the 27-year-old seemingly challenged Conor McGregor to take him on in an MMA fight.

In a now-deleted tweet, McGregor replied with a picture of 82-year-old Senator Mitch McConnell and said: “Nakisa [Bidarian] already rang me, lad, it’s this guy next for you. Good luck pal.”
