When you think of prison food, you probably don\u2019t think of good food\u2026 but people were still shocked when they saw just how bad it is.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

People have been left shocked after seeing what prisoners in the US eat.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When you think of\u00a0prison<\/a>\u00a0food, \u2018quality\u2019 is probably not a word likely to spring to mind.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, people have still been left shocked after seeing what prisoners in the\u00a0US<\/a>\u00a0are given.<\/p>\n

The US has one of the highest per capita rates of imprisonment in the\u00a0world<\/a>, with 531 prisoners per 100,000 people, according to Statista.<\/p>\n

While fifth in terms of per capita prison population, in absolute terms the US has the most prisoners of any country, with nearly 1.8 million people in prison.<\/p>\n

And of course, those people need feeding, and at $3 a plate the US isn\u2019t exactly splashing the\u00a0cash<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This has been made very clear in a recent Reddit post, which shed some light on what prison meals actually look like \u2013 and they don\u2019t consist of an awful lot.<\/p>\n

With the majority being served on plastic trays, the meals are frequently high in carbs but low in key nutrients such as proteins.<\/p>\n

In fact, the food has such a low nutritional value that many prisoners have been found to suffer from long term health problems after being released.<\/p>\n

While prisoners are able to supplement their diet by buying things from the store in the prison, many don\u2019t have the resources to be able to do this.<\/p>\n

People released from prison can go on to suffer from a number of\u00a0health<\/a>\u00a0issues.<\/p>\n

This can also include things like mental health problems, heightened aggression, brain fog, and depression.<\/p>\n

People took to the comments to share their thoughts on the diet, with one saying: \u201cThese are some of the better trays. Trust me most trays are terrible and almost inedible with all the meat containing soy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another wrote: \u201cThis is much nicer than most jail food tbh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other people said they thought that seeing as the people involved were prisoners, it didn\u2019t matter what food was given to them, with one saying: \u201cIf you don\u2019t want that meal then don\u2019t do the crime.\u201d<\/p>\n

But another person pointed out that feeding people so poorly only creates the conditions for further crime.<\/p>\n

They wrote: \u201cThese comments clearly show the issue. Americans think prison is about punishing the individuals for doing the crime, when it should be about rehabilitating them and making them able to return to society to be a contributing member after.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo sh*t, they shouldn\u2019t be eating steaks, but they also shouldn\u2019t suffer health consequences of being imprisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Advocates for prison reform in the US argue that the wording of the 13th Amendment allows for prisoners to be worked as slaves, with the amendment abolishing \u2018slavery\u2019 and \u2018involuntary servitude\u2019, but adding \u2018except as a punishment for crime\u2019.<\/p>\n
