{"id":10472,"date":"2024-03-28T09:37:30","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T09:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=10472"},"modified":"2024-03-28T09:37:30","modified_gmt":"2024-03-28T09:37:30","slug":"two-feared-dead-six-construction-workers-buried-after-baltimore-bridge-collapse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=10472","title":{"rendered":"Two feared dead, six construction workers buried after Baltimore bridge collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On March 26,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/father\/\">fathers<\/a>\u00a0Miguel Luna, 49, and Maynar Suazo, 37, were working the graveyard shift on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/news\/francis-scott-key-bridge-collapses-in-a-matter-of-seconds-after-cargo-ships-slams-into-column\/\">Francis Scott Key Bridge<\/a>\u00a0in Baltimore, Maryland, when about 1:30 a.m., a cargo ship rammed into\u00a0one of its support beams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As the bridge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/tragedy\/\">crumbled<\/a>, it tossed six men \u2013 two were rescued from the team of eight \u2013 into their watery graveyard of the Patapsco River.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe have a broken heart,\u201d cried Luna\u2019s wife, the mother of his three children.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Keep reading to learn more about the two men whose lives were claimed by the same bridge they were trying to fix.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Miguel Luna, 49, was proud to be part of the crew working on Maryland\u2019s iconic Francis Scott Key Bridge. Over the past several years, he shared many social media photos of his construction work on the bridge, thankful for the opportunity to provide for his wife and three children.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid031DtRYaQWfFcFM68nDg7Z8E5bHFWbNKRQMssn2Un7NXPeUyrGE8XS9BimmJNJaWxgl%26id%3D100010069261577&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"367\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But since the early morning hours of March 26, Luna\u2019s loved ones are among the six families who are praying for a miracle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey only tell us that we have to wait, that for now they can\u2019t give us information,\u201d Luna\u2019s wife, Maria del Carmen Castell\u00f3n, told Telemundo 44.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpermalink.php%3Fstory_fbid%3Dpfbid09HxqkRMng989BZVBFCmWREuhGKRyvCQ6QgjoGPDJG5XnEoqGhzjAUT49zGUnn1tNl%26id%3D100010069261577&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"645\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His heartbroken wife adds: \u201c[We feel] devastated, devastated because we have a broken heart, because we don\u2019t know if they\u2019ve already rescued them. We\u2019re waiting to hear some news.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-maynor-suazo\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maynor Suazo<\/h2>\n<p>Less than one year ago, Maynor Suazo\u2019s mother, Yesica, gushed over her son in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fyesica.suazo.5%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0jdC4RfSZdpEZfwY4GfCBNToLX13QpaeYBT7u3ZEQn68x3xySJshDfiNMXxSwugW8l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"678\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I want to thank God first and my family, especially Maynor Suazo,\u201d she captions a post, which shows her son at college graduation. \u201cToday my son is a professional. the wait for this title was long as we faced many adversity, as first was the pandemic, hurricanes, floods, illness, human losses. but so far God has been good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And now, the heartbroken mother is grieving the likely death of her son, with no body to bury.<\/p>\n<p>Suazo, 37, of Azacualpa, Santa Barbara, is the second worker presumed dead.<\/p>\n<p>The Honduran man, a father of two, had been living in the United States for the past 18 years, and his brother Martin told local news that his brother emigrated in order to \u201cimprove the quality of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin said that he plans to travel to the United States to repatriate his brother\u2019s remains.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fedward.rincon%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0vxkCHvhbMBgZgUjSChGiaGV8fCHn3bocasNv9cbfgm12ZUh88TY4emCae4FxoS4Gl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"837\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In a separate interview with CNN, Martin confirmed that Suazo is survived by his son, 18, and daughter, five.<\/p>\n<p>A family friend shares a heartfelt tribute for the man, writing: \u201cMaynor is a guy, with warmth and quality of people, entrepreneur with a vision and mission to serve our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The post continues: \u201cWe wish with our hearts this alive, Our prayers to see you again and continue to enjoy your joy and enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-heroes\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Heroes\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The crew was fixing potholes on the steel-arched bridge \u2013 named after Francis Scott Key, who wrote the words of \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d \u2013 that opened in 1977.<\/p>\n<p>It was about 1:30 a.m., when, according to Maryland Gov.\u00a0Wes Moore, a 300-meter-long ship, the Dali, appeared to strike a main concrete pier, which rests on soil\u00a0underwater and is part of the foundation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-147677 lazyautosizes lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, 664px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358.jpg 8192w, https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358-1536x1025.jpg 1536w\" alt=\"\" width=\"8192\" height=\"5464\" data-src=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358.jpg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358.jpg 8192w, https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/03\/GettyImages-2107850358-1536x1025.jpg 1536w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-eio-rwidth=\"8192\" data-eio-rheight=\"5464\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Kena Betancur \/ Getty.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The collision caused the collapse of the bridge and tossed the eight men into the frigid, dark waters below, triggering a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/16-mile-bridge-baltimore-collapses-after-ship-collision-fox-baltimore-reports-2024-03-26\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">desperate<\/a>\u00a0rescue effort through the \u201cincreasingly treacherous conditions\u201d in \u201cdarkened, wreckage-strewn waters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives last night,\u201d Moore said, adding the bridge was up to code with no known structural issues.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the eight men were rescued, six are still missing.<\/p>\n<p>Those missing include a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Pet\u00e9n and a 35-year-old from Camot\u00e1n, Chiquimula.
