Denzel Washington spoke out about his Christian faith knowing this isn\u2019t something that is readily accepted by some of his peers in Hollywood. Explaining an intense spiritual awakening, the Oscar winner declared: \u201cI was being filled with the Holy Spirit.\u201d<\/h3>\n

Denzel Washington is one of those rare actors who\u2019s not afraid to talk about politics or religion. In an interview with\u00a0GQ Magazine,<\/em>\u00a0Washington unabashedly shared his faith journey and revealed one personal moment when he was touched by God.<\/p>\n

\u201cI read from the Bible every day, and I read my\u00a0Daily Word,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Washington\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0GQ when asked if there\u2019s a code he currently lives by. He also revealed the memorable spiritual experience he had over 30 years ago at the church he still attends: \u201cThe minister was preaching, \u2018Just let it go.\u2019 I said, \u2018I\u2019m going to go with it.\u2019 And I had this tremendous physical and spiritual experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Washington further detailed what happened next. \u201cIt did frighten me,\u201d he added about the spiritual moment. \u201cI was slobbering, crying, sweating. My cheeks blew up. I was purging. It was too intense. It almost drove me away. I called my mother, and she said I was being filled with the Holy Spirit. I was like, \u2018Does that mean I can never have wine again?’\u201d<\/p>\n

The veteran actor\u2019s father was a Pentecostal preacher, but their relationship was troubled after his parents divorced. That turned Washington away from his Christian faith, but he found his way back and thanked God for that spiritual awakening. Ever since that day, Washington has been a proud Christian, even going so far as to consider becoming a preacher.<\/p>\n

\u201cA part of me still says, \u2018Maybe, Denzel, you\u2019re supposed to preach. Maybe you\u2019re still compromising,\u2019\u201d he\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0during a 1999 interview. In the end, Washington decided to stick to playing preachers in the movies. He did, however, offer some creative advice for staying close to God every day. \u201cPut your slippers way under your bed so when you get up in the morning, you have to get on your knees to find them,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd while you\u2019re down there, start your day with prayer. Ask for wisdom. Ask for understanding. Don\u2019t aspire to make a living, aspire to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also wasn\u2019t afraid to speak about politics when asked if he would ever run for office himself. \u201cNo. I\u2019m an independent,\u201d he declared. \u201cIn some ways I\u2019m liberal, and other ways I\u2019m conservative. We get so locked in on \u2018you have to be this or that.\u2019 It\u2019s ridiculous. I\u2019m not a liberal or a conservative completely. Who is? Or why do you have to be? You assess the pros, the cons, of both sides and you make an intelligent decision.\u201d<\/p>\n
