What was left of his black fur was tattered and stood straight up on his neck.<\/p>\n<p>The dog probably hadn\u2019t eaten a proper meal in weeks and he could barely walk.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew anything about the strange creature except that he had been hanging around an orchard in Madera Ranchos, California for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>And nobody dared to approach the animal, which looked scary and dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Skinny, balding and completely alone.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cwerewolf\u201d stood by the side of the road for several months. They were too afraid to get close enough to find out.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the end of March, a passerby saw him and wrote a quick post about him on Facebook from her car.<\/p>\n<p>The woman then waited near the dog until someone arrived to help. And it wasn\u2019t long before another animal hero, Megan Bowe, was on the scene.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26156\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26156\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10226 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/04135354\/megan1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/Bowes-Adoptable-Rescued-Pups-1267161716700923\/photos\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Facebook\/ Bowe\u2019s Adoptable Rescued Pups<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI was about ready to cry when I saw how bad off he was,\u201d Megan Bowe, founder of Bowe\u2019s Adoptable Rescued Pup,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedodo.com\/close-to-home\/werewolf-dog-rescue-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tells The Dodo<\/a>. \u201cHe was really on his last leg. He was depressed and could barely even stand up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Megan immediately realized what this \u201cwerewolf\u201d really was: a very sick and neglected German shepherd mix.<\/p>\n<p>She named him \u201cKing.\u201d Then, she put him in her car and drove him to an emergency veterinary clinic.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10228\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10228\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10228 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/04135354\/shep1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"960\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/Bowes-Adoptable-Rescued-Pups-1267161716700923\/photos\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Facebook\/ Bowe\u2019s Adoptable Rescued Pups<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>King seemed relieved to finally get help, and he willingly went with Megan.<\/p>\n<p>The veterinarian discovered that King suffered from a variety of diseases and injuries. His mange disappeared and he regained his strength.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, he was finally well enough to have surgery on his pelvis and tail.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26171\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26171\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10240\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/04135352\/car1.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/04135352\/car1.jpg 838w, https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/05\/04135352\/car1-768x880.jpg 768w\" alt=\"Sch\u00e4ferblandning\" width=\"838\" height=\"960\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/Bowes-Adoptable-Rescued-Pups-1267161716700923\/photos\/?ref=page_internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Facebook\/ Bowe\u2019s Adoptable Rescued Pups<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And the operations were successful!<\/p>\n<p>Now, King goes for walks daily to strengthen his leg, on orders from his vet.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the month, King will visit the veterinarian again to see how he is healing and to have his stitches removed.
