In one of the most bizarre cases in fraud ever, one man was arrested and sent to a mental hospital after trying to get his identity back in a 35-year ordeal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You read that right.<\/p>\n

William Woods ended up homeless, hopeless, and unable to open a bank account all thanks to Matthew Keirans, a former University of\u00a0Iowa<\/a>\u00a0Hospital employee, who\u00a0stole his identity<\/a>\u00a0in 1988, and wouldn\u2019t be caught for decades.<\/p>\n

The 58-year-old\u00a0pleaded guilty<\/a>\u00a0on Monday April 1 and was convicted of one count of false statement to a National Credit Union Administration insured institution, which brings a hefty\u00a0sentence<\/a>\u00a0of up to 30 years, and one count of aggravated identity theft \u2013 a two-year sentence.<\/p>\n

Having worked at the hospital from 2013 to July 20, 2023, when he would be fired after his secret identity was revealed, Keirans was able to go undetected for so long due to his willingness to maintain his lifestyle \u2013 which included\u00a0a wife<\/a>\u00a0and child, both who took the name Woods.<\/p>\n

How did Keirans and Woods meet?<\/h2>\n

Well, Keirans once worked with Woods at a\u00a0hot dog cart<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Albuquerque<\/a>, and in 1990, he would obtain a fraudulent Colorado identification card with Woods\u2019 name and birthday on it so that he could use it to get a job at a restaurant and to open a\u00a0bank account<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What did Keirans do with Woods\u2019 identity?<\/h2>\n

He then used Woods\u2019 name to buy a car, but both checks bounced.<\/p>\n

Driving this technically stolen car to Idaho, where he would abandon it, Keirans would then withdraw all of his money from his account and moved to a different state to start a new life.<\/p>\n

Then six years after stealing Woods\u2019 name, he got married in 1994 and\u00a0had a child<\/a>, whose last name is Woods.<\/p>\n

Keirans would then go on to commit several fraudulent crimes, such as acquiring a copy of Woods\u2019 birth certificate using information, he found about Woods\u2019 family on Ancestry.com, buying cars, taking out loans and getting a job at the\u00a0Wisconsin hospital<\/a>, making more than\u00a0$700,000<\/a>\u00a0in his 10 years working for them.<\/p>\n

What happened to Woods?<\/h2>\n

But the real William Woods wouldn\u2019t go down without a fight and in 2019, he was homeless and tried to clear his credit at the bank as \u2018someone\u2019 had been using his name and wracked up debt.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, even though he was able to provide the corrected identification, he couldn\u2019t answer the security questions, which led to Keirans being called.<\/p>\n

The fraud squad then told the bank that nobody in California should have access to the accounts and the LAPD was called.<\/p>\n

Keirans then faxed the officers a copy of Woods\u2019 Social Security card and birth certificate, and a Wisconsin driver\u2019s license he had under Woods\u2019 name.<\/p>\n

The real Woods was swiftly arrested and charged with\u00a0identity theft<\/a>\u00a0and false impersonation, under a misspelled version of Keirans name: Matthew Kierans.<\/p>\n

The poor man was then thrown in a\u00a0mental hospital<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, after refusing to back down that he was the real Woods and a Judge decided that he wasn\u2019t mentally competent to stand trial.<\/p>\n

The next year, Woods would plead no contest to the identity theft charges and was sentenced to two years imprisonment, along with $400 in fines and to cease using the name William Woods.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, Woods wasn\u2019t going to stop.<\/p>\n

How did Keirans get caught?<\/h2>\n

After finding out where Keirans was working in January 2023, he filed a complaint with the University of Iowa Hospitals\u2019 security department, who referred it to the University of Iowa Police Department.<\/p>\n

There, Detective Ian Mallory opened an investigation and found Woods\u2019 biological father on his birth certificate and tested the father\u2019s\u00a0DNA<\/a>\u00a0against Woods\u2019 DNA.<\/p>\n

Of course, it was a match.<\/p>\n

So, on July 17, 2023, Mallory interviewed Keirans and presented him with the damning DNA evidence which would end a 35-year crime.<\/p>\n

Keirans pleaded guilty August 14 and was charged with a false use of birth certificate and was sentenced to 20 days in Johnson County Jail, with credit for time already served.<\/p>\n

He was then indicted December 12, on five counts of false statement to a National Credit Union Administration insured institution and two counts of aggravated identity theft, after a complaint was filed against him on August 29.<\/p>\n

He pleaded guilty to one count of each charge, and the other counts were dropped against him.<\/p>\n

Nobody knows how Woods\u2019 is doing right now, but we hope he\u2019s doing much better!<\/p>\n
