There are lots of famous Kylies out there. Kylie Jenner and Kylie Minogue are just a couple that spring to mind, but today we\u2019re talking about the\u00a0other<\/em>\u00a0Kylie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Obviously, I\u2019m talking about Kylie the\u00a0dolphin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Researchers<\/a>\u00a0found Kylie in a saltwater inlet known as the Firth of Clyde on\u00a0Scotland\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0west coast; an area known to be home to thousands of harbor porpoises.<\/p>\n

Sadly, Kylie was separated from her pod at some point in time, leaving her as the lone dolphin in the Clyde. But it seems she managed to find a new family.<\/p>\n

Kylie has been spotted swimming with the harbor porpoises in the area, but the relationship between the creatures doesn\u2019t stop at swimming.<\/p>\n

David Nairn, founder and director of the organization Clyde Porpoise, was curious to learn more about Kylie\u2019s interactions with the porpoises and so used an underwater recording\u00a0device<\/a> known as a hydrophone to record the animals.<\/p>\n

He captured audio of multiple encounters between 2016 and 2018, which PhD candidate Mel Cosentino then listened to.<\/p>\n

Usually, dolphins whistle to communicate while porpoises communicate with what are known as narrow-band, high-frequency (NBHF) clicks.<\/p>\n

Cosentino recorded some clicks from Kylie that are standard for common dolphins, but she also noticed that the dolphin was making clicks with eight or more amplitude peaks at the key 130 kilohertz- mark \u2013 which just so happens to be the frequency at which porpoises chat.<\/p>\n

No only does Kylie click like a porpoise \u2013 she actually doesn\u2019t whistle, as dolphins usually do.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe definitely identifies as a porpoise,\u201d Nairn said,\u00a0per<\/a>\u00a0National Geographic.<\/p>\n

In listening to the recordings, Cosentino noticed that the exchanges Kylie seemed to have with the porpoises mimicked the rhythm of a \u2018conversation\u2019, with the creatures largely taking it in turns to respond to each other.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, since we don\u2019t speak porpoise, it\u2019s hard to say exactly how much \u2013 if any \u2013 meaningful information was being passed.<\/p>\n

However, it seems there was at least some effort being made, and dolphin behavior expert Denise Herzing believes it\u2019s an \u2018attempt\u2019 at communication that the \u2018porpoises probably recognize\u2019, marking a world first in cross-species communication.<\/p>\n

The findings were published in 2022 in a\u00a0paper<\/a>\u00a0titled\u00a0<\/em>\u201cI beg your pardon? Acoustic behaviour of a wild solitary common dolphin who interacts with harbour porpoises.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Herzing, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study, said of the findings: \u201cThe results are tantalizing. What\u2019s really telling is that Kylie doesn\u2019t make any whistles, because dolphins always make whistles and porpoises never do.\u201d<\/p>\n
