Credit: Max Mumby\/Indigo\/Getty<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Being so meaningful to their identity, many Maori women wear their face art with pride, including Oriini Kaipara, who hit a major milestone back in 2021 after she became the first person ever to host a primetime news broadcast in the country sporting a moko kauae.<\/p>\n<p>While the moment was iconic, it did not come without backlash.<\/p>\n<p>One viewer, identified only as David, made a complaint to the show writing that her traditional tattoo is a \u201cbad look\u201d and added that Kaipara also \u201cbursts into the M\u0101ori language which we do not understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><iframe class=\"ql-video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Crzyiwirkoj\/embed\/captioned\" height=\"1166\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The news anchor was not going to take this lightly. Instead, she headed straight for social media to condemn David and his ignorant remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for all your complaints against me and my \u2018moku\u2019. I do find them very difficult to take seriously, given there is no breach of broadcast standards,\u201d she began in a post on Instagram. \u201cIf I may, I\u2019d like to correct you on one thing \u2013 it is moko not \u2018moku\u2019. A simple, helpful pronunciation guide of \u2018Maw-Caw\u2019 will help you articulate the word correctly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gather your complaints stem from a place of preference on how one must look on-screen, according to you.
