NASA has shared three images that one of its spacecraft took with \u2018exquisite timing\u2019<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A NASA spacecraft has taken photographs of an oddly shaped object passing the Moon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now that you\u2019ve gotten over the hype of the\u00a0total solar eclipse<\/a>\u00a0which took place yesterday (April 8), how about a sighting of an object which \u2018zipped\u2019 past the\u00a0Moon<\/a>?<\/p>\n

NASA\u00a0<\/a>has revealed \u2018several images\u2019 were captured by its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) between March 5 and 6, 2024.<\/p>\n

The LRO has been circling and studying the Moon for a whopping 15 years and the LRO operations team at NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center in\u00a0Greenbelt, Maryland<\/a>\u00a0used its \u2018narrow angle camera\u2019 to capture images of a strange object which went whizzing past the Moon last month.<\/p>\n

The images show a surfboard or frisbee-like shaped object flying past the surface of the Moon and it didn\u2019t take long for people to flood to\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0to weigh in on the sighting.<\/p>\n

One X user said: \u201cIf NASA sighted a surfboard shaped object near the moon it can mean only one thing. That NASA has invested in MARVEL comics after the announcement of a Silver Surfer movie soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately for\u00a0Marvel<\/a> fans, that\u2019s not quite what the sighting was about.<\/p>\n

NASA clarified the object is actually\u00a0Korea<\/a>\u00a0Aerospace Research Institute\u2019s Danuri lunar orbiter \u2013 the Republic of Korea\u2019s first spacecraft at the Moon and has been in lunar orbit since December 2022.<\/p>\n

The spacecraft travelled past NASA\u2019s LRO in \u2018nearly parallel orbit\u2019 and three of LRO\u2019s orbits \u2018happened to be close enough to Danuri\u2019s to grab snapshots\u2019, NASA\u2019s website explains.<\/p>\n

However, it adds LRO\u2019s operations team on the ground in Maryland showed \u2018exquisite timing in pointing LROC [the type of camera] to the right place at the right time\u2019 as the two spacecraft were travelling at \u2018fast relative velocities\u2019 of around \u20187,200 miles or 11,500 kilometers per hour\u2019.<\/p>\n

NASA adds: \u201cAlthough LRO\u2019s camera exposure time was very short, only 0.338 milliseconds, Danuri still appears smeared to 10 times its size in the opposite direction of travel because of the relative high travel velocities between the two spacecraft.<\/p>\n

NASA adds the first image was \u2018oriented\u2019 to capture Danuri \u2018from three miles, or five kilometers, above it\u2019.<\/p>\n

The third photograph was also \u2018reorientated\u2019 to catch a glimpse of the Korean spacecraft at five miles (eight kilometers) below and a duplicate of the image was \u2018stretched\u2019 and pixels containing the Danuri \u2018unsmeared\u2019 so it\u2019s clearer to see the spacecraft.<\/p>\n

NASA adds: \u201cThe image was rotated 90 degrees so the surface would look like something a person would see looking out the window.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
