An iPhone user has shared their fears after receiving two messages from Apple warning them of a potential attack on their phone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Considering even something as simple as a call from an unknown number can be enough to send\u00a0anxiety<\/a>\u00a0flooding through us, the last thing most of us would want to see on our\u00a0phones<\/a>\u00a0is a message like the one this user shared on\u00a0Reddit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0post on the platform<\/a>, the iPhone user explained they first received a warning notification in August 2023 from the email address \u2018threat-notifications@apple.com\u2019.<\/p>\n

They received another email this week, prompting them to take to Reddit to share the email and ask users for advice.<\/p>\n

The first email read: \u201cALERT: State-sponsored attackers may be targeting your iPhone.\u201d<\/p>\n

It continued: \u201cApple<\/a>\u00a0believes you are being targeted by state-sponsored attackers who are trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID\u2026 These attackers are likely targeting you individually because of who you are or what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The email went on to warn that the\u00a0attackers<\/a>\u00a0may even be able to access the owner\u2019s \u2018camera and microphone\u2019, adding: \u201cWhile it\u2019s possible this is a false alarm, please take this warning seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

The owner was advised to update their phone and enable \u2018lockdown mode\u2019 to prevent the attack, but they received notification of \u2018another attack\u2019 this week.<\/p>\n

In the second email, the owner was warned that the attacks \u2018cost millions of\u00a0dollars<\/a>\u00a0and are individually deployed against a very small number of people\u2019.<\/p>\n

The iPhone user told\u00a0Reddit<\/a>\u00a0users they were \u2018worried\u2019 about the emails, adding: \u201cI\u00a0googled<\/a>\u00a0their email and everything seems legit, has anyone ever had this kind of experience? Should I worry about it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Users responded to insist the poster should take the warning seriously, with one advising: \u201cThis is legitimate. Follow the advice provided. Start securing any other accounts you deem important with 2FA and ideally with a hardware security key\u2026 Don\u2019t be concerned, just be prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n

On its website, Apple confirms that it does notify users about threats and protecting against mercenary spyware, saying notifications are \u2018designed to inform and assist users who may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware attacks\u2019.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0tech company<\/a>\u00a0states such attacks have been known to target individuals such as journalists, activists,\u00a0politicians<\/a>\u00a0and diplomats, and stated they are \u2018ongoing and global\u2019.<\/p>\n

Anyone who receives a threat notification is advised to \u2018enlist expert help, such as the rapid-response emergency security assistance provided by the Digital Security Helpline at the non-profit Access Now\u2019.<\/p>\n

More generally, Apple advises all\u00a0iPhone<\/a>\u00a0users to protect themselves from cybercriminals and consumer malware by making sure devices are up to date and protected with a passcode.<\/p>\n
