A producer of\u00a0The Simpsons<\/em>\u00a0has issued an apology after killing off a longtime character this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The long-running and hugely popular cartoon has been running since 1989, and has seen a lot of characters come and go in that time.<\/p>\n

35 seasons have come and gone, and\u00a0The Simpsons<\/em><\/a>\u00a0have certainly\u00a0predicted a lot of real-life events<\/a>\u00a0in that time.<\/p>\n

While Larry the Barfly may be a minor character in the 20th Century Fox\u00a0series<\/a>, his sudden death in a recent episode has shocked fans to the core.<\/p>\n

Voiced by Harry Shearer, who also provides the voices for the likes of Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, and Waylon Smithers.<\/p>\n

Larry, who has been in the series since the 1989 special \u2018Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire\u2019, was often found at the pub, in particular at Moe\u2019s Tavern, the bar that also sees Homer\u2019s friends Lenny, Carl and Barney as regular visitors.<\/p>\n

Despite being part of\u00a0The Simpsons<\/em>\u00a0for such a long time, the 765th episode overall revealed that Larry\u2019s full name was in fact Lawrence Dalrymple.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cremains of the Day\u2019 explored the aftermath of Larry\u2019s death, as Homer and friends at Moe\u2019s come to terms with the loss and the mystery behind his life.<\/p>\n

Homer, Moe, Lenny and Carl attend Larry\u2019s funeral, but realize that they know almost nothing about their \u2018friend\u2019.<\/p>\n

The group, who Iris \u2013 Larry\u2019s mother \u2013 describes as his \u2018best friends\u2019, unconvincingly tells a vague fishing story at the funeral.<\/p>\n

Larry\u2019s ashes are then sprinkled at a \u2018special place\u2019, Serenity Falls.<\/p>\n

Fans of\u00a0The Simpsons<\/em>\u00a0were caught off guard by Larry\u2019s death, with many taking to social media in the aftermath of watching his \u2018death episode\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cHoly s**t Larry from the Simpsons died, rest in peace my drunken king,\u201d one person penned on X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust learned they are killing off Larry on\u00a0The Simpsons\u00a0<\/em>tomorrow. I need a minute,\u201d a second added.<\/p>\n

While a third pointed out: \u201cReally enjoyed last night\u2019s Simpsons episode. But I couldn\u2019t stop wondering why there was no mention of Larry\u2019s best friend, Sam.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-executive producer Tim Long has since apologized for Larry\u2019s death after an outpouring of love for the character.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0TMZ that he\u2019s sorry to fans upset about the death, though added he was pleased with the reaction because it speaks to how beloved the show still is.<\/p>\n

Long went on to say that the creative team meant for Larry\u2019s death to hit viewers as hard as it did, despite being a minor character in the show.<\/p>\n
