{"id":11323,"date":"2024-04-28T17:44:35","date_gmt":"2024-04-28T17:44:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=11323"},"modified":"2024-04-28T17:44:35","modified_gmt":"2024-04-28T17:44:35","slug":"aunt-jemimas-great-grandson-angry-that-her-legacy-is-being-scrapped-its-injustice-to-my-family-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=11323","title":{"rendered":"\u201cAunt Jemima\u2019s\u201d great-grandson angry that her legacy is being scrapped: \u201cIt\u2019s injustice to my family\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/quaker-oats\/\">Quaker Oats<\/a>\u00a0caused quite the stir in 2020 when it announced it would be retiring its \u201cAunt Jemima\u201d brand in light of the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yet just one day after said announcement, a great-grandson of \u201cAunt Jemima\u201d protested the decision, stating the family\u2019s belief that the move would stand only to erase black history and suffering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an injustice for me and my family. This is part of my history,\u201d Larnell Evans Sr., a Marine Corps veteran, said, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/illinois\/chicago\/aunt-jemimas-great-grandson-enraged-her-legacy-vanishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Patch<\/a>. He then also accused the corporation of trying to erase slavery after profiting off of it for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe racism they talk about, using images from slavery, that comes from the other side \u2014 white people. This company profits off images of our slavery. And their answer is to erase my great-grandmother\u2019s history. As per reports, Quaker described Green as a \u201cstoryteller, cook, and missionary worker,\u201d but omitted the fact that she was born into slavery.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, Green was hired to serve pancakes at the Chicago\u2019s World\u2019s Fair in 1893, the first time the \u201cAunt Jemima\u201d brand name was used. After her death, in 1923, Anna Short Harrington \u2013 who Larnell Evans Sr. claims was his great-grandmother \u2013 stepped into the role in 1935, after a Quaker Oats representative saw her serving pancakes at the New York State Fair and decided to make her \u201cAunt Jemima\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Aunt Jemima &quot;I'se in town, Honey!&quot;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3ipamH6EEwI?feature=oembed\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Evans said: \u201cShe worked for that Quaker Oats for 20 years. She traveled all the way around the United States and Canada making pancakes as Aunt Jemima for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis woman served all those people, and it was after slavery. She worked as Aunt Jemima. That was her job. \u2026 How do you think I feel as a black man sitting here telling you about my family history they\u2019re trying to erase?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now that Quaker Oats is aiming to retire the brand, Evans is unhappy that the coparation has been able to profit off of a racial stereotype before simply moving on when it became convenient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many white people were raised looking at characters like Aunt Jemima at breakfast every morning? How many white corporations made all the profits, and didn\u2019t give us a dime?\u201d said Evans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re just going to erase history like it didn\u2019t happen? \u2026 They\u2019re not going to give us nothing?
