Kristen Stewart has hit out at Hollywood over its representation of female filmmakers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Twilight<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>star is currently working on her directorial debut for a feature\u00a0film<\/a>, an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir\u00a0The Chronology of Water,\u00a0<\/em>and hit out over how\u00a0Hollywood<\/a> represents female filmmakers.<\/p>\n

Stewart made the decision to move away from\u00a0Hollywood<\/a>\u00a0to make the film, explaining that she wanted more creative freedom on the movie.<\/p>\n

Instead, production on the movie will be taking place in\u00a0Latvia<\/a>, and stars Imogen Poots from\u00a028 Weeks Later<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Explaining her decision to move production for the film outside of Hollywood, Stewart hit out at how Hollywood has ‘chosen four’ women.<\/p>\n

The actor and director accused Hollywood of using this as a way to appear to be representing women without actually putting the work in to affect meaningful change.<\/p>\n

She added that Hollywood has still not ‘done enough’ to ‘broaden perspective’.<\/p>\n

Speaking<\/a>\u00a0to Hollywood Report, Stewart said: \u201c[There\u2019s a] thinking that we can check these little boxes, and then do away with the patriarchy, and how we\u2019re all made of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy for them to be like, \u2018Look what we\u2019re doing. We\u2019re making Maggie Gyllenhaal\u2019s movie! We\u2019re making Margot Robbie\u2019s movie!\u2019 And you\u2019re like, OK, cool. You\u2019ve chosen four.\u201d<\/p>\n

The star explained that she is not criticising those women themselves, but the system.<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cI\u2019m in awe of those women, I love those women [but] it feels phony.<\/p>\n

“If we\u2019re congratulating each other for broadening perspective, when we haven\u2019t really done enough, then we stop broadening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stewart’s criticism didn’t stop at that either, as she also explained that she had wanted greater creative freedom.<\/p>\n

She hit out at Hollywood over ‘regurgitating’ the same kinds of movies which it knows will do well\u00a0financially<\/a>\u00a0while not exploring more outlandish or unusual themes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, [a film] that\u2019s not regurgitating\u00a0<\/strong>something that\u2019s pretty standardized,” she explained.<\/p>\n

“My movie is about incest and periods and a woman violently repossessing her voice and body, and it is, at times, hard to watch\u2026but it\u2019s gonna be a f*cking thrill ride.\u201d<\/p>\n

The movie will be filmed in\u00a0Latvia<\/a>, with sets transformed into US cities, including\u00a0New York<\/a>\u00a0and San Diego.<\/p>\n

It will be Stewart’s directorial debut in a feature film, with her previous work including projects for\u00a0musicians<\/a> such as Boygenius.<\/p>\n

Stewart revealed that she is in ‘soft prep’ for the movie, with the production process due to start in around two weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
