These smart dogs are specially trained to help vision-impaired people navigate the world, acting as their eyes.<\/strong><br \/>\n<i class=\"fa fa-clock-o\"><\/i><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body-container\">\n<div class=\"article-main\">\n<div class=\"article-content-container\">\n<div class=\"article\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>But recently, one blind man was left stunned when he and his service dog were denied entry at a restaurant, after a worker accused him of faking his disability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paul Castle, from Seattle, is blind, but thankfully has a service dog named Mr. Maple to help him get around.<\/p>\n<p>His popular TikTok account,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@matthewandpaul\">@matthewandpaul<\/a>, has many videos detailing his life as a blind person in a lighthearted style. These include many videos showing Mr. Maple in action, showing the dog\u2019s ability to navigate Paul in any circumstances.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote id=\"v74580992420370340\" class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@matthewandpaul\/video\/7331052114812095786\" data-video-id=\"7331052114812095786\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\"><p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed\/v2\/7331052114812095786?lang=en-CA&amp;referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theanimalclub.net%2Fdogs%2Foutrage-after-blind-man-and-service-dog-kicked-out-of-restaurant-im-speechless%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0DwtSkKEzrSxercW8814_S_anoMEcg-e8oq8dBZrEwQ7F45PsQAQOxgBw_aem_AXyBXMi9x6K4XJOcV24MXwokf6mOgEImCzwTCH_Ke61xvOFp5L9NTqxfS52xF4cANOiiH8NAD2h9fafym55ULZ2U&amp;embedFrom=oembed\" name=\"__tt_embed__v74580992420370340\" sandbox=\"allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-scripts allow-top-navigation allow-same-origin\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>While most of Paul\u2019s videos are light and humorous,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@matthewandpaul\/video\/7366279259301743903\">one recent video<\/a>\u00a0took a more dramatic tone as he revealed he had been kicked out of a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m blind and I just got kicked out of a restaurant in Seattle,\u201d he tells his audience, explaining that after entering the establishment with Mr. Maple, an employee came up to him and said \u201cno pets, only service dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employee skeptically asked of Mr. Maple was an \u201cemotional support dog,\u201d even though Mr. Maple was in a harness that read \u201cGuide Dogs for the Blind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Paul stressed that he was blind, the employee told him, \u201cyou don\u2019t look blind,\u201d and said he was looking right at him. Paul explained that most blind people have some functional vision, but he only has a \u201cpinhole of vision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employee was unmoved, saying \u201cThis isn\u2019t my first rodeo\u201d and continuing to doubt him. Many commenters wrote that the employee was violating the law by denying him entry and casting doubt on his blindness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is illegal. They\u2019re only allowed to ask you two questions. Is this a service dog? And what services is your dog train to perform? Those are the only questions that they are legally allowed to ask,\u201d one comment reads.<\/p>\n<p>Many urged him to name the restaurant so they can take action and protest, but he did not name the establishment. However, he settled the manner in his own way.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@matthewandpaul\/video\/7367010215595707691\">follow-up video<\/a>, he said he met with the restaurant\u2019s manager (the employee from the first altercation was not present). Paul told him he did not want to press charges or even get the employee fired, but rather to just get people to \u201cunderstand the spectrum of blindness,\u201d and \u201cthe importance of (real) service animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CucP1TJL7H2\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=800&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theanimalclub.net&amp;rp=%2Fdogs%2Foutrage-after-blind-man-and-service-dog-kicked-out-of-restaurant-im-speechless%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0DwtSkKEzrSxercW8814_S_anoMEcg-e8oq8dBZrEwQ7F45PsQAQOxgBw_aem_AXyBXMi9x6K4XJOcV24MXwokf#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A3066.5%7D\" height=\"988\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Paul learned that the employee had recently had a negative experience with an untrained service dog in the restaurant, and didn\u2019t believe he was really blind because he was able to sustain eye contact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think most people want things to be black or white,\u201d Paul said. \u201cIf you have a disability, they want it to be the version they\u2019ve seen represented in movies and TV for many years, whereas 93% of people who are blind have some functional vision. This guy had no clue about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul says he received an apology from the employee as well as a generous gift card to the restaurant. Many blind people, and people who rely on service dogs, frequently face this kind of discrimination and skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had Uber drivers just drive away as soon as they saw my dog. So, it all speaks to a bigger issue,\u201d Paul told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiro7.com\/news\/local\/guide-dog-blind-owner-face-discrimination-seattle\/CK5GIWLHLJG4TLJOCT3BIXCQIY\/\">KIRO<\/a>. \u201cBut it\u2019s not about so much reprimanding people as educating them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s outrageous that this blind man was kicked out of a restaurant, but we\u2019re glad he eventually received an apology.
