The Land Down Under had a different name previously<\/h2>\n

If you thought The Land Down Under was always called Australia, that\u2019s where you would be wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In fact, the continent stole its name from a country that wasn\u2019t even renamed until the 1890s.<\/p>\n

Before this,\u00a0Australia<\/a>\u00a0was called New Holland, which was coined by Dutch navigators.<\/p>\n

But even before this, it was called various different things by the indigenous people who lived there before the region was discovered by the west.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until the\u00a0English<\/a>\u00a0explorer, Matthew Flinders, circumnavigated the continent in 1804 and described it as \u2018Australia\u2019.<\/p>\n

When a map and book describing his journey was published in 1814, the name \u2018Terra Australis\u2019 was actually used instead.<\/p>\n

However, Flinders always insisted his preference was still \u2018Australia\u2019.<\/p>\n

So which country is the name stolen from?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s none other than the world\u2019s coldest country –\u00a0Antarctica<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Up until the early 1800s, nobody had seen this part of the world.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s true that Antarctica doesn\u2019t have true permanent residents to this day.<\/p>\n

To put it simply, Antarctica used to be called Australia.<\/p>\n

Then, in 1824, today\u2019s Australia took the name, leaving the\u00a0icy<\/a>\u00a0continent essentially without an actual name until the 1890s.<\/p>\n

\u2018Antarctica-Australia\u2019 was originally called Australia because it was believed to be part of the legendary \u2018Terra Australis\u2019 continent.<\/p>\n

When the higher powers wanted a change from \u2018New Holland\u2019, they chose Australia.<\/p>\n

In the time between this and choosing the final name, Antarctica was known as \u2018the Antarctic Continent\u2019.<\/p>\n

People suggested names such as Ultima and Antipodea, which gained traction for some time.<\/p>\n

But finally the 1890s rolled around, and somebody decided it would be perfect to add an extra \u2018a\u2019 and leave it at that.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0US<\/a>\u00a0Geographical Survey states: \u201cThe application of names to geographic features is an inherently human need, deriving from our desire to make a landscape familiar so that our place-based activities can be conducted more efficiently.<\/p>\n

\u201cAntarctica is no exception, and so there is a legitimate need for mechanisms to propose, review, and approve names of geographic features.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the most interesting things about the frozen continent is that there is much yet to explore.<\/p>\n
