A warning has since been put out about eating dead animals<\/h2>\n

A Texas resident baffled doctors after tests revealed he\u2019d contracted a rare bacterial infection on his ranch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The man, thought to be in his 50s, was patrolling his property on\u00a0Christmas Eve<\/a>\u00a0when he came across a\u00a0dead lamb<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A report from the Centres of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\u00a0claims<\/a>\u00a0that the animal \u2018died suddenly\u2019 and that the anonymous male had elected to \u2018butcher\u2019 it.<\/p>\n

After seasoning and\u00a0cooking<\/a>\u00a0the lamb, he and five people dug into the dish – but only the man himself took\u00a0ill<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Eleven days after eating the animal, the rancher headed to a\u00a0US<\/a> hospital where he was screened for having a fever and a high white blood cell count.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he was treated for a black eschar on his right wrist, blistered lesions on his right arm, extensive edema and leukocytosis.<\/p>\n

After being plied with\u00a0antibiotics<\/a>, the man spent a week recovering in the institution before being discharged.<\/p>\n

However, upon his arrival home, he discovered that two more animals had died on his farm.<\/p>\n

It was later discovered that the deceased ewes suffered an ocular and nasal hemorrhage.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0bizarre<\/a>\u00a0situation led CDC investigators to probe further into the case.<\/p>\n

Tests<\/a>\u00a0later confirmed that the unnamed man had been infected with anthrax, a rare but serious illness caused by a spore-forming bacterium called Bacillus anthracis.<\/p>\n

According to<\/a>\u00a0Mayo Clinic, anthrax mainly affects livestock and wild game but humans can become infected through direct or indirect contact with infected animals.<\/p>\n

The CDC states that the illness can also spread to humans through contact with mammal hides, hair and the air.<\/p>\n

After investigating the incident, the CDC confirmed that the lamb was \u2018suspected to be the source of the patient\u2019s illness, in light of suspected anthrax\u2019.<\/p>\n

Scientists added in the\u00a0Morbidity and Morality Weekly<\/em>\u00a0report that this would serve as a cautionary tale for civilians not to eat dead animals.<\/p>\n

\u201cProcessing animals that die suddenly from unknown causes should be avoided, irrespective of the season,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, it still remains unclear how the lamb became infected with anthrax.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s thought that the young animal, along with the two dead ewes, must have ingested anthrax spores on the property.<\/p>\n

Anthrax, first described in the late 1700s, usually causes symptoms to develop within the first six days of bacteria exposure.<\/p>\n

These symptoms vary but can include swollen lymph glands, itchy black lumps on the skin, significant swelling and flu-like feelings.<\/p>\n

If you believe you\u2019ve been exposed to a rare illness, you must seek medical advice immediately as early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.<\/p>\n

While anthrax is most common in continents such as\u00a0Africa<\/a> and southern Asia, vulnerable US residents are advised to receive a dedicated vaccination.<\/p>\n
