The last minute decision led to his untimely death<\/h2>\n

Steve Irwin\u2019s life-long friend and cameraman revealed what he said in his final moments before his tragic detah.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The conservationist and global TV icon died in 2006 after being stung by a stingray while filming for\u00a0Ocean\u2019s Deadliest\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0Australia’s<\/a>\u00a0Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n

One of the people present for the tragedy was Justin Lyon, who was a long-term crew member and worked with\u00a0Steve<\/a> for most of his career.<\/p>\n

And Lyon once revealed exactly what was going through the beloved conservationist’s mind just\u00a0moments before he passed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Justin said they had been out recording when they spotted a giant stingray swimming towards them, so they decided to film it.<\/p>\n

He recalled that just several minutes after capturing the footage, the\u00a0Crocodile Hunter<\/em><\/a>\u00a0star suggested that the pair took \u2018one last shot\u2019 of the deadly creature – a decision which would cost him his life.<\/p>\n

He told the Australian morning program\u00a0Studio 10:<\/em>\u00a0\u201cI had the camera and thought this was going to be a great shot.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut all of a sudden the stingray propped on its front and started stabbing Steve with its tail. There were hundreds of strikes within just a few seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n

The stingray struck and punctured Steve\u2019s chest, which left him gasping for air.<\/p>\n

Justin remembered Steve being pulled back into the boat following the frenzy of stings, where he did not shy away from what was happening to him.<\/p>\n

Whilst he was struggling, Justin said he urged his friend to think of his family in the moment.<\/p>\n

He recalled: \u201cHe just sort of calmly looked up at me and said, \u2018I\u2019m dying\u2019. And that was the last thing he said. We hoped for a miracle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did CPR on him for over an hour before the medics came, but then they pronounced him dead within 10 seconds of looking at him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve, who was just 44, left behind him his\u00a0adoring wife Terri<\/a>, and two children Bindi and Robert, who were just eight and three at the time.<\/p>\n

Now both young adults,\u00a0Bindi<\/a>\u00a0and Robert have done their animal-loving dad proud, following in his footsteps at the family-run Australia Zoo.<\/p>\n

Robert announced last month that a turtle species, discovered by his late dad, would be joining Australia Zoo.<\/p>\n
