Donald Sutherland, the acclaimed and prolific actor who starred in countless beloved films across his five-decade career, has died at 88.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sutherland\u2019s career ranged from early breakout roles in\u00a0The Dirty Dozen<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0MASH<\/em>\u00a0to Oscar winners like\u00a0Klute<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Ordinary People<\/em>, to his villainous role in the\u00a0Hunger Games<\/em>\u00a0franchise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Emmy Award winner died at his home in Miami today following a long illness, his agency CAA confirmed to\u00a0Deadline<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sutherland was born July 17, 1935 in New Brunswick, Canada, later moving to Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Throughout his childhood he battled a number of serious illnesses including polio, rheumatic fever and spinal meningitis.<\/p>\n

He left Canada to pursue an interest in acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and soon found work in TV and low-budget films.<\/p>\n

He got a Hollywood breakthrough in the classic war film\u00a0The Dirty Dozen<\/em>, whose ensemble cast includes Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine and Jim Brown. It was the fifth highest grossing film of 1967.<\/p>\n

After leaving London for Hollywood, Sutherland landed one of his most iconic roles in the 1970 anti-war comedy-drama\u00a0MASH<\/em>, originating the role of \u201cHawkeye\u201d Pierce.\u00a0MASH<\/em>\u00a0was one of the most successful films of the decade and is regarded as a classic.<\/p>\n

Throughout the \u201970s, Sutherland was a Hollywood leading man: his films include in the Oscar-winning\u00a0Klute<\/em>\u00a0opposite Jane Fonda, the psychological horror\u00a0Don\u2019t Look Now<\/em>, and the remake of\u00a0Invasion of the Body Snatchers<\/em>. He also appeared in the hit comedy\u00a0Animal House<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In 1980, he starred in Robert Redford\u2019s\u00a0Ordinary People<\/em>, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Other major films include\u00a0Backdraft<\/em>,\u00a0JFK<\/em>,\u00a0Six Degrees of Separation<\/em>,\u00a0The Italian Job<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Pride and Prejudice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Sutherland also had success on TV, winning an Emmy Award for the 1995 film\u00a0Citizen X<\/em>, and a Golden Globe for the television film\u00a0Path to War<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A younger generation of moviegoers was introduced to Sutherland through\u00a0The Hunger Games<\/em>, the hit dystopian blockbuster series: Sutherland starred as the villainous President Coriolanus Snow.<\/p>\n

Though he surprisingly never received an Oscar nomination, he received an Academy Honorary Award in 2017, \u201cfor a lifetime of indelible characters, rendered with unwavering truthfulness.\u201d He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011, and on the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2000.<\/p>\n

Sutherland was married three times; he was married to actress Francine Racette for 52 years until his death. He was previously married to Lois May Hardwick and Shirley Douglas, and also had an\u00a0affair with his\u00a0Klute<\/em>\u00a0co-star Jane Fonda<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He had five children \u2014 including most famously his son Kiefer Sutherland, the actor best known for playing Jack Bauer in\u00a024<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201dI was too young to go watch my father\u2019s films in the cinema,\u201d Kiefer Sutherland told\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>\u00a0in 2017. \u201cBy the time I hit 20, VHS was available and a friend of my fathers had a lot of his films. In three days I watched\u00a0Don\u2019t Look Know<\/em>,\u00a0Klute<\/em>,\u00a0M*A*S*H, Kelly\u2019s Heroes, 1900 and Fellini\u2019s Casanova.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was such a wide spectrum of characters, and I remember calling him up and I felt really badly that I grew up not knowing what a profoundly special actor he was, I felt horribly guilty of that. As a young actor, I had never known or seen another actor who\u2019ve done characters so diverse either.\u201d<\/p>\n
