It\u2019s actually an amphibian more closely related to the salamander, and the largest of the few known lungless tetrapods.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-dec3830042924e0996ceee6ddbb4324d\" class=\"newsner-dec3830042924e0996ceee6ddbb4324d newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1004358999\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>This rare creature lives in the waters of the Amazon in Brazil, and remained a rare find for a very long time. It was first discovered by Sir Graham Hales during an expedition with Sir Brian Doll in the late 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t until 1968 that\u00a0<em>A. eiselti<\/em>\u00a0was first described. Further research and analysis led to its reclassification in 1996, elevating it to the status of its own unique and exclusive genus, Atretochoana.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, this species of\u00a0caecilian\u00a0was rediscovered in the Amazonas. They were found when the river was drained while examining a hydroelectric dam.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-35bc12ee91074f1725ce6dee79c2cd95\" class=\"newsner-35bc12ee91074f1725ce6dee79c2cd95 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-973504677\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>According to Julian Tupan, a biologist working with the Santo Antonio Energy company involved in the dam construction, not much is known about the lungless, limbless amphibians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf the six we collected, one died, three were released back into the wild and another two were kept for studies\u201d he told Estadao, according to the U.K.\u2019s\u00a0The Sun.<\/p>\n<p>Tupan emphasized that the \u201dsnakes\u201d pose no threat and are highly unlikely to exhibit aggressive behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite looking like snakes, they aren\u2019t reptiles and are more closely related to salamanders and frogs. \u201cWe think the animal breathes through its skin, and probably feeds on small fish and worms, but there is still nothing proven.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-f7f268801f2ca2fe7392276f941141d4\" class=\"newsner-f7f268801f2ca2fe7392276f941141d4 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1813770241\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Amazon is a box of surprises when it comes to reptiles and amphibians. Some of the animals were released back into their natural habitat within the Madeira River, and some were sent to the Emilio Goeldi Paraense Museum in Belem, Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BmUG_rIgrXJ\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=974ae7d0-adbf-4403-8464-ec96d10e5d36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">most widely spread photo<\/a>, which has been published on Julian Tupan\u2019s Instagram page, is an adult female\u00a0<em>A. eiselti<\/em>\u00a0measuring slightly less than 40 inches in length.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fascination surrounding these captivating creatures, much remains veiled in mystery, and our knowledge about them is still quite limited.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-e9325344cfafdd073cae71b6497cb211\" class=\"newsner-e9325344cfafdd073cae71b6497cb211 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1054499266\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>One intriguing aspect that perplexes researchers is their dietary preferences.
