Recently published results from a 2019 dig could point to the ‘potential significance’ of an ancient Jewish settlement.<\/h2>\n

Archaeologists have finally shared their surprising spoils uncovered from a dig in Zanoah – a moshav featured in the Old Testament of the Bible.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Book of Nehemiah<\/em><\/a>, Zanoah is mentioned as one of the towns resettled by Jewish exiles who were returning from Babylonian captivity.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s said the returning residents, who followed\u00a0Moses<\/a>\u00a0out of\u00a0Egypt<\/a>\u00a0and across the Red Sea in the\u00a0Bible\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Book of Exodus,<\/em>\u00a0were the descendants of past village dwellers and that Zanoah was situated in the Promised Land, also known as Canaan.<\/p>\n

Back in 2019, a team of experts headed to the\u00a0famed Jewish settlement<\/a>\u00a0and later wrote up their findings in\u00a0Hadashot Arkheologiyot.<\/em><\/p>\n

The latter is a popular journal used to document preliminary reports and archaeological findings across Israel.<\/p>\n

Writing<\/a>\u00a0in March 2024, the team revealed the successful excavation at Zanoah had originally taken place during July and August 2019 on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority.<\/p>\n

Funded<\/a>\u00a0by the Israel Electric Corporation, the survey saw the archaeologists salvage a clay jar handle \u2018bearing a\u00a0lmlk<\/em>\u00a0stamp impression\u2019.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s thought that the pottery item originated from the late\u00a0Iron Age<\/a>\u00a0and that it had been \u2018fired at a high temperature and [was] of excellent quality\u2019.<\/p>\n

The seventh-century BCE item was discovered alongside other handles bearing similar impressions as well as a decorated cosmetic bowl made of white limestone.<\/p>\n

More finds have since been identified as being created in the Early Byzantine era and the second year of the First Jewish Revolt.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, one of the recovered artefacts bore a stamp on its handle that read \u2018of the King\u2019.<\/p>\n

Experts believe that this was to honor King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah in 701 BC.<\/p>\n

Hezekiah\u2019s life featured in the\u00a0Book of 2 Kings<\/em>\u00a0while in the\u00a0Book of 2 Chronicles<\/em>\u00a0it\u2019s said the king worked to reopen the Temple of Solomon.<\/p>\n

The latter is more commonly referred to as \u2018the First Temple\u2019 and religious believers claim the hub was built on the spot where God created Adam.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Hezekiah is also accused of smashing a bronze snake statue that Moses was commanded by God to create.<\/p>\n

So, does the discovery of these artefacts confirm the Exodus of Israelites leaving Egypt and crossing the Red Sea with Moses?<\/p>\n

Well, not quite, but it does confirm that Zanoah was an important site \u2018and highlights [its] potential significance\u2019 in potentially proving the Bible as gospel in the future.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, dig director Ya\u2019akov Billig claimed that the uncovered artefacts show that\u00a0farming activities<\/a>\u00a0were conducted on the slope of the village.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it is likely that some of the finds originated in the ruin and were subsequently washed down the slope over the years, the majority of the finds, especially those dating from the early Byzantine period, relate to farming activities conducted on the hill slopes,\u201d wrote dig director Ya\u2019akov Billig.<\/p>\n
