Rev. Wendy Dalrymple\u2019s tattoos deemed \u2018disgusting\u2019 by some as cathedral says backlash is \u2018unacceptable\u2019<\/h2>\n

A Church of England faith leader is receiving backlash for the tattoos on her arms after she was announced as the next cantor and head of worship at a prominent cathedral.<\/p>\n

Rev. Wendy Dalrymple is a priest and soon to be precentor and residentiary canon designate at Canterbury Cathedral in England.<\/p>\n

Dalrymple immediately received backlash online\u00a0after the cathedral\u00a0tweeted the announcement with an image of Dalrymple revealing her many arm tattoos.<\/p>\n

One user wrote, \u201cThe tats [tattoos] are disgusting and should bar her from\u00a0any religious role.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Canterbury Cathedral told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that the negative reaction is \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another Twitter use wrote of Rev. Dalyrmple\u2019s tattoos, \u201cSo @CburyCathedral, you have gone woke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canterbury Cathedral turned off comments on the post shortly after its online announcement \u2014 allowing Twitter users to only quote-tweet the post.<\/p>\n

Dalrymple responded to the tweet by saying she had mixed emotions about leaving her current church but was \u201cexcited for the next part of the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

The priest said she is saddened by the backlash she\u2019s received online but grateful for the support from the cathedral.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0(iStock)<\/span><\/p>\n

For the past eight years, she has been the rector of All Saints with Holy Trinity in Loughborough, England, in the Diocese of Leicester.<\/p>\n

In Dalrymple\u2019s role, she helped turn the church into an intercultural worshiping community, which made the church inclusive for people from different backgrounds, SWNS reported.<\/p>\n

Dean of Canterbury David Monteith, a Northern Irish Anglican priest in the Church of England, tweeted his response to the online hate by saying, in part, that he was \u201csaddened by the abuse she has received.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Canterbury Cathedral also told Fox News Digital in emailed comments on Wednesday, \u201cWhilst the overwhelming majority of feedback to Wendy\u2019s appointment has been extremely positive, unfortunately there has been some online abuse about her appearance from a small number of individuals \u2014 sadly, a common experience for many women.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said Dalrymple was saddened but is thankful for the support from Dean Monteith.<\/p>\n
