A 14-year-old girl has shared her horrific experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis two years after doctors dismissed her symptoms.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Liberty \u2018Libbie\u2019 Ashworth, now 18, first began to feel unwell when she was in the sixth grade, frequently feeling sick, having no appetite, and becoming \u2018really constipated\u2019.<\/p>\n

Libbie, who is based in Panora,\u00a0Iowa, US<\/a>, told\u00a0TODAY<\/a>\u00a0how she and her parents went to the doctor when she reached freshman year as the symptoms had persisted and she had started getting blood in her stool.<\/p>\n

She also regularly\u00a0had a fever<\/a>\u00a0and an upset stomach, and was even tested positive for COVID.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was actually told that it\u2019s normal for teenage girls to have bouts of blood in their stool,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The issues were also attributed to her being a dancer, which she originally thought may be causing her back pain.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom was not very happy, and we moved to a different [doctor],\u201d Libbie said.<\/p>\n

Libbie\u2019s dad, Tim Ashworth, 52, said it was \u2018frustrating\u2019 and they were told they were bringing their daughter to the doctor too often.<\/p>\n

Libbie was dismissed repeatedly \u2013 enough to the point they even suggested her issues might be all in her head \u2013 and was sent her to see a\u00a0psychiatrist<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt almost broke me because it really hurt having a medical professional that I\u2019m supposed to trust with my life tell me it was in my head,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

However, in 2020, Libbie was rushed to hospital with sharp pains in her abdomen.<\/p>\n

The trip came after her mom had demanded they perform an colonoscopy on their daughter and she was finally given a referral. It was never performed, however, as Libbie got intense cramping and was taken to the emergency room.<\/p>\n

A CT scan was performed, and that\u2019s when they found something in the teen\u2019s stomach.<\/p>\n

Libbie was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer after two years of symptoms. (WHO13)<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After further investigation in the form of an MRI, they found a \u2018tumor that was grapefruit-sized\u2019, and Libbie was diagnosed with\u00a0stage 4 colon cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n
