{"id":13411,"date":"2024-07-20T12:50:04","date_gmt":"2024-07-20T12:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=13411"},"modified":"2024-07-20T12:50:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-20T12:50:04","slug":"gen-z-want-people-to-stop-using-the-thumbs-up-emoji-as-they-label-it-passive-aggressive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=13411","title":{"rendered":"Gen Z want people to stop using the thumbs up emoji as they label it &#8216;passive aggressive&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"summary_summary__q_VAA\">The sign might be intended as positive, but Gen Zers have a different opinion<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\"><strong>Gen Zers are begging people to stop using the thumbs up emoji with the argument it&#8217;s actually &#8216;passive aggressive&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">What do you think is the most passive aggressive emoji?<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Personally I&#8217;d say it&#8217;s the classic smiley face &#8211; with the\u00a0<a class=\"link_link__LDfG6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/technology\/news\/apple-update-new-emojis-iphone-116412-20240129\">various iterations<\/a> of even bigger smiles now, that one has just taken on more of a sarcastic edge. :).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">It&#8217;s worth bearing in mind that I&#8217;m a Millennial though, so I might think differently if I was born just a few years later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The belief that Gen Zers &#8211; those born in the late &#8217;90s and early &#8217;00s &#8211; consider the thumbs up to be passive aggressive has come to light through a post on\u00a0<a class=\"link_link__LDfG6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/reddit\">Reddit<\/a>\u00a0which described the icon as &#8216;unsettling&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">In the post, the Reddit user explained that they had started work in an \u2018adult\u2019 job where staff often communicated through\u00a0<a class=\"link_link__LDfG6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0Teams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The post, which was shared a couple of years ago, continued: &#8220;Currently, there&#8217;s only a few emojis you can use to react to a message (unless of course, you respond, and can use any emoji). It\u2019s super rude if someone just sends you a thumbs up. So I also had a weird time adjusting because my workplace is the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Another commented: \u201cIt probably feels unsettling because it&#8217;s impersonal, and based just off this post, you seem like the kind of person who prefers more genuine interactions with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The conversation continued on\u00a0<a class=\"link_link__LDfG6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/twitter\">X<\/a>, where more and more people agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">\u201cLook I don\u2019t make the rules but the thumbs up emoji is passive aggressive.
