{"id":13499,"date":"2024-08-03T10:09:30","date_gmt":"2024-08-03T10:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=13499"},"modified":"2024-08-03T10:09:30","modified_gmt":"2024-08-03T10:09:30","slug":"mum-furious-after-child-blasted-by-teacher-for-writing-in-cursive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=13499","title":{"rendered":"Mum furious after child blasted by teacher for writing in cursive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/technology\/\">technology<\/a>\u00a0replaced pens and papers in classrooms, cursive has become to many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/students\/\">students<\/a>\u00a0the same as Egyptian hieroglyphics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/school\/\">schools<\/a>\u00a0eliminating cursive from its curriculum, the artform is making a slow comeback with many institutions flipping the script.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This could be, in part, a result of a viral social media post where a teacher shamed a seven-year-old girl for using loopy connected letters to sign her John Hancock on an assignment.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Keep reading to learn more about this student and why schools are bringing back cursive!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Previous research shows that handwriting improves spelling accuracy, memory recall and conceptual understanding.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, scientists say the slow process of tracing out letters and words increases brain activity, allowing people more time to process and learn.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fxoalyxobaby%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02RfcdzS4inRdH1VGubVM9vkr1e6AsUeQXzEVNFE3dSMhUDPwzgGG541kvghy8Kk87l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"590\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a fundamental difference in brain organization for handwriting as opposed to typing,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/handwriting-brain-connections-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ramesh Balasubramaniam<\/a>, a neuroscientist at the University of California. \u201cEven when the movements are very similar, the activation seems much, much higher in handwriting. It shows that there\u2019s more involvement of these brain regions when you\u2019re handwriting, which might give you some specific advantages.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-boosts-brain-acitivity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boosts brain activity<\/h2>\n<p>As technology evolves, our dependence on it grows and experts say that handwriting shouldn\u2019t be lost in the digital age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Schools] need to bring in more writing into curriculum design,\u201d Balasubramaniam says.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting his opinion is a new study\u00a0 \u2013 \u201cHandwriting but not typewriting leads to widespread brain connectivity: a high-density EEG study with implications for the classroom\u201d \u2013 shows handwriting, over swiping or typing on a device, boosts brain connectivity, particularly in learning and memory.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-152415 lazyautosizes lazyloaded\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychology\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2023.1219945\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">2024 study<\/a>\u00a0explains \u201cWhen writing by hand, most of the brain is active.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van der Meer, who teaches neuropsychology at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, says handwriting \u201cputs the brain in a state that helps both children and adults learn more and remember better\u2026Typing, on the other hand, requires mechanical and repetitive movements that trade awareness for speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In summary, the study finds that \u201cthe ongoing substitution of handwriting by typewriting in almost every educational setting may seem somewhat misguided as it could affect the learning process in a negative way.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-functional-illiteracy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Functional illiteracy<\/h2>\n<p>In 2010, several states were \u201cmisguided\u201d when they adopted the Common Core standards initiative, which does not require students to learn cursive writing.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, eliminating cursive penmanship from learning is leading to functional illiteracy across the U.S. where \u201chard-to-read handwriting\u201d is causing problems for people performing basic adult tasks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"647\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/swnsdigital.com\/us\/2019\/01\/americans-struggle-with-hard-to-read-handwriting-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">2021 study,<\/a>\u00a0a staggering 70% of Americans struggle to reading notes or reports from their colleagues and 45% claim they can\u2019t even make out their own.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also reveals that the most common items to be misread are shopping lists, notes to colleagues, birthday cards, and thank you notes.<\/p>\n<p>Others said without the ability to write in cursive, that signing important documents is Connecticut, tells the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-13273363\/handwriting-extinction-IQs-begin-fall.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Daily Mail<\/a>. \u201cIt is very important, and [cursive] should be brought back to all schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the need to preserve and practice the flowy handwriting,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mycursive.com\/the-14-states-that-require-cursive-writing-state-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">24 states<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 as of 2024 \u2013 reversed earlier decisions to remove cursive handwriting from curriculum and now mandate it.<\/p>\n<p>Still not all schools are teaching cursive, and some are even reprimanding young children for using it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-student-warned-for-using-cursive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student warned for using cursive<\/h2>\n<p>In 2015, seven-year-old Alyssa handed in her assignment on short vowels and was scolded for writing her name in loopy flowing letters.<\/p>\n<p>Her teacher wrote in red pen at the top of her lesson sheet: \u201cStop writing your name in cursive. Not only is her mother a military veteran but, she took the time to teach her very young child how to write in cursive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsugar.com\/family\/little-girl-gets-trouble-writing-cursive-38503998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">PopSugar<\/a>, the incident reportedly happened in Kansas where there\u2019s currently no legal requirement for students to learn cursive.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet reports that the social media post divided users, some suggesting the teacher was wrong for reprimanding the child while others said the child \u201cneeds to follow directions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your thoughts on cursive script?
