Being ghosted after a date can be brutal<\/h2>\n

Getting ghosted is often not a nice feeling, but the good news is that it’s actually not your fault.<\/p>\n

I know what you’re thinking: “It must be my fault… a little bit?”<\/p>\n

But according to a\u00a0dating<\/a>\u00a0expert, it’s something that you shouldn’t worry about, as it’s usually got nothing to do with you.<\/p>\n

Even if you think you embarrassed yourself on the first date by dropping\u00a0spaghetti<\/a>\u00a0all over your\u00a0t-shirt<\/a> or by accidentally snorting while you were laughing – there is no need to worry.<\/p>\n

However, it does seem that experts in the field do look at ghosting slightly differently.<\/p>\n

Ghosting is when you get rejected without any closure or acknowledgement. The worst bit is that it usually comes out of nowhere.<\/p>\n

“The more time people have spent with each other\u2014and the more emotionally intimate the connection, the more likely it is that ghosting will be\u00a0mentally<\/a>\u00a0and emotionally harmful to the ghosted person,” Carla Marie Manly, a clinical psychologist in the\u00a0US<\/a>,\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0Men’s Health.<\/p>\n

\u201cGhosting is an\u00a0unhealthy<\/a>\u00a0and disrespectful behaviour.<\/p>\n

“Unless a person presents a threat of some kind, it\u2019s inappropriate not to communicate that you\u2019re not interested in moving forward.”<\/p>\n

Now, according to the author of\u00a0new study<\/a>\u00a0‘Ghosting: Social rejection without explanation, but not without care’, the dating trend was ‘only further exacerbated due to the\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>‘.<\/p>\n

YeJin Park notes that ghosting became easier when ‘most communications moved online’.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0explained<\/a>\u00a0to PsyPost that their findings in the study are best explained by using the words of American author Adam Grant: “Ghosting isn’t always due to a lack of care. It’s often a misguided effort to avoid hurting someone.<\/p>\n

“Many people stop replying to shield others from pain.<\/p>\n

“They don’t realise being ignored is usually worse than being rejected.<\/p>\n

“Candour stings briefly. Silence leaves an open wound.”<\/p>\n

In other words, they are trying not to hurt your feelings, but end up doing so regardless.<\/p>\n

Sex<\/a>\u00a0educator Lorrae Bradbury says that it’s ok to be upset but it’s not ok to think that there’s no one better out there for you.<\/p>\n

\u201cGhosting is usually a clear indication that they are unwilling or unable to give you the closure you\u2019re seeking,\u201d Bradbury explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps they don\u2019t know the answers themselves, or can\u2019t communicate their feelings properly. Either way, you\u2019re unlikely to get a straight response.<\/p>\n
