A hearing is now taking place following the Titan sub disaster<\/h2>\n

A former OceanGate employee has revealed the \u2018first red flag\u2019 she spotted affecting the safety of the Titan submersible.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been just over a year since disaster struck when five people journeyed deep underwater to visit the wreck of the\u00a0Titanic.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Titan sub<\/a>\u00a0had descended thousands of feet when contact was lost on 18 June 2023. Onboard the vessel were OceanGate’s CEO Stockton Rush,\u00a0British<\/a>\u00a0explorer Hamish Harding, British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman, and veteran French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet.<\/p>\n

However, all five people died when the sub, in what was confirmed by the\u00a0US\u00a0<\/a>Coast Guard, was\u00a0destroyed by a \u2018catastrophic implosion\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n

And now,\u00a0a hearing is being held<\/a>\u00a0by the US Coast Guard to ‘uncover the facts surrounding the incident and develop recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future’.<\/p>\n

Following the release of the\u00a0first photo of the sub following the implosion<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0final words from the Titan<\/a>, an ex-employee has spoken about her alleged safety concerns ahead of the mission.<\/p>\n

Bonnie Carl joined OceanGate as a human resources and finance director.<\/p>\n

She told the hearing that she was aware of\u00a0a waiver people were required to sign\u00a0<\/a>before going on the sub, but claims she \u2018never saw anyone sign anything\u2019 as her job to get the\u00a0money<\/a>\u00a0from customers was early on in the process.<\/p>\n

Sky News\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0her saying: \u201cWhen I was taking money, we hadn\u2019t even finished building the Titan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only was she a finance and human resources director, but she was also a ‘pilot in training’ \u2013 so she had conducted a dozen domestic dives in the vessel.<\/p>\n

Carl alleged that there were \u2018a couple of things that gave me pause\u2019 regarding the sub\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n

The ex-employee alleged the \u2018first red flag\u2019 was engineering director Tony Nissen not letting her see paperwork for the sub’s acrylic dome.<\/p>\n

Carl further claimed how an O ring groove on the Titan\u2019s titanium also looked \u2018odd\u2019 to her.<\/p>\n

With her experience as a scuba diver, she said that her questions about this spot weren\u2019t \u2018satisfactorily answered\u2019.<\/p>\n

In a later safety meeting, Carl claimed the paperwork kept from her revealed the dome was rated to be capable of reaching a depth of 1,300 metres.<\/p>\n

Obviously, this is much, much less than what\u2019s needed to reach the Titanic’s wreck.<\/p>\n

However, she claims this was why Nissen \u2018didn\u2019t want us to see it\u2019.<\/p>\n

Carl further said that she left the company in 2018 as OceanGate was not a place she \u2018wanted to work if that was their attitude to safety\u2019.<\/p>\n
