Award-winning director Tim Burton spoke out after receiving criticisms on a number of movies<\/h2>\n

Tim Burton offered up an explanation for his casting choices after a number of his movies were called out for featuring predominantly white actors.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Director and\u00a0animator<\/a>\u00a0Burton has established himself as a high-profile name Hollywood thanks to releases like\u00a0Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas\u00a0<\/em>and Sweeney Todd.<\/em><\/p>\n

Most recently he’s\u00a0worked with Jenna Ortega<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em>, but the director has received some criticisms from viewers over representation in the movie.<\/p>\n

Burton has previously come under fire for some of his casting choices in earlier films, including by\u00a0The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/em>\u00a0screenwriter Caroline Thompson.<\/p>\n

During an appearance on the film\u00a0podcast<\/a>\u00a0Script Apart<\/em>, Thompson claimed she’d butted heads with creators of the movie over the villain, Oogie Boogie, who was voiced by Black actor and singer Ken Page.<\/p>\n

On the podcast, Thompson said: “Oogie Boogie is a derogatory term for African Americans in the American South. I begged the powers that be to change something about that character, because of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said: this is so ugly and dangerous and antithetical to everything inside me. I did not win that fight\u2026 It was a troubling part of the film for me, to be frank.\u201d<\/p>\n

The controversy is now continuing with\u00a0Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em>, which features one scene in which Astrid Deetz (Ortega) finds herself on board the \u2018Soul Train\u2019 on the way to the Great Beyond.<\/p>\n

The scene is a reference to the ’70s musical variety\u00a0TV<\/a>\u00a0show\u00a0Soul Train<\/em>, which spotlighted R&B, soul and hip-hop music by Black artists.<\/p>\n

After watching the scene, one\u00a0Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em>\u00a0viewer commented: \u201cIsn\u2019t this kind of racist, or is it just me?\u201d<\/p>\n

Another wrote: \u201cWhile I was watching the movie, my thoughts were \u2018He finally hired a lot of Black actors but why only for this segment of the movie?'”<\/p>\n

Some viewers took issue with the sequence (X)<\/cite><\/div>\n

When it comes to Burton’s casting choices, he has previously spoken out about having a predominantly white cast in his 2016 movie\u00a0Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.<\/em><\/p>\n

When asked by Bustle about the lack of diversity in the film, as well as in his movies more generally, Burton responded: “Nowadays, people are talking about it more \u2026 things either call for things, or they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

“I remember back when I was a child watching\u00a0The Brady Bunch<\/em>\u00a0and they started to get all politically correct, like, OK, let\u2019s have an Asian child and a black – I used to get more offended by that than just – I grew up watching blaxploitation movies, right?<\/p>\n

“And I said, that\u2019s great. I didn\u2019t go like, OK, there should be more white people in these movies.”<\/p>\n

Though some viewers took issue with the Soul Train sequence in\u00a0Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em>, others defended Burton.<\/p>\n
