Researchers are worried about the effects of climate change on the Antarctic Peninsula<\/h2>\n

When satellite footage showed Antarctica turning green, scientists were left scrambling for answers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Antarctic Peninsula is warming up so \u2018dramatically\u2019 that experts have warned that this could mean dire consequences for its future.<\/p>\n

Researchers<\/a>\u00a0from the universities of Exeter and Hertfordshire, and the\u00a0British<\/a>\u00a0Antarctic Survey, found that\u00a0Antarctica<\/a>\u00a0is warming faster than the\u00a0global<\/a>\u00a0average, which has led to\u00a0vegetation to grow rapidly.<\/a><\/p>\n

After extreme heat events were noted to be happening more frequently by use of satellite data, it found the amount of vegetation cover over 10 times larger than forty years ago.<\/p>\n

Where it was previously less than one square kilometre (0.38 square mile) in 1986, its last recording was 12 square kilometres (4.6 square mile) in 2021.<\/p>\n

They realized this enormous growth by satellite imagery, which confirmed that the amount of plant life on the peninsula has increased.<\/p>\n

Not only has it increased, but it\u2019s also rapidly accelerating.<\/p>\n

The findings were published in the\u00a0Nature Geoscience\u00a0<\/em>journal, with a warning about the future of the region.<\/p>\n

Dr. Thomas Roland, from the University of Exeter, stated: \u201cThe sensitivity of the Antarctic Peninsula\u2019s vegetation to climate change is now clear and, under future anthropogenic warming, we could see fundamental changes to the biology and landscape of this iconic and vulnerable region.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur findings raise serious concerns about the environmental future of the Antarctic Peninsula, and of the continent as a whole.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to protect Antarctica, we must understand these changes and identify precisely what is causing them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Antarctic Peninsula welcoming native plants that are spreading to more areas over time has led to fears that new species of plant life are cropping up often.<\/p>\n

These new invasive species could create trouble on the peninsula after researchers theorized that the plants were being brought over by eco-tourists and scientists.<\/p>\n

They said that they \u2018urgently\u2019 need to conduct more studies to figure out the climate and environmental factors which are allowing this \u2018greening\u2019 to hasten.<\/p>\n

Essentially, this could mean that in the future, more and more plants could populate the area, and if so, the damage\u00a0climate change<\/a>\u00a0is causing could be palpable.<\/p>\n

Dr. Olly Bartlett from the University of Hertfordshire said: \u201cAs these ecosystems become more established \u2013 and the climate continues to warm \u2013 it\u2019s likely that the extent of greening will increase.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoil in Antarctica is mostly poor or non-existent, but this increase in plant life will add organic matter, and facilitate soil formation \u2013 potentially paving the way for other plants to grow.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis raises the risk of non-native and invasive species arriving, possibly carried by eco-tourists, scientists or other visitors to the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Roland added: \u201cThe plants we find on the Antarctic Peninsula \u2013 mostly mosses \u2013 grow in perhaps the harshest conditions on Earth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe landscape is still almost entirely dominated by snow, ice and rock, with only a tiny fraction colonised by plant life.<\/p>\n
