A specialist believes the ancient find will ‘keep science busy for a long time to come’<\/h2>\n

Archaeologists believe they\u2019ve uncovered an object in a German grave predating all known Christian artefacts from the region by half a century.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2017-2018, experts headed to the northwest suburbs of\u00a0Frankfurt<\/a>\u00a0– the site of the former\u00a0Ancient Roman<\/a>\u00a0town Nida.<\/p>\n

There on the outskirts of the\u00a0German<\/a>\u00a0city, they came across a burial ground containing 127 graves,\u00a0according to<\/a>\u00a0Archeology News.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s understood the specialists took particular interest in a grave where the remains of a man, thought to be aged 35-40, were laid to rest between A.D 230 and 270.<\/p>\n

Alongside an incense burner and pottery, the\u00a0researchers<\/a>\u00a0discovered a piece of wafer-thin, small, rolled silver foil resting below his chin.<\/p>\n

This item measures just 1.4 inches (3.5 centimetres) and was likely worn like an amulet.<\/p>\n

The 18-line text has been dubbed the Frankfurt Silver Inscription (Leibniz Institute for Archaeology in Mainz (LEIZA))<\/cite><\/div>\n

It has since been classified as a phylactery\u2014an object believed to confer protection upon its owner.<\/p>\n

Dr Tine Rassalle, an independent\u00a0biblical<\/a>\u00a0archaeologist who was not involved in the study,\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0Live Science that the purpose of these amulets \u2018was to protect or heal their owners from a range of misfortunes, such as\u00a0illnesses<\/a>, bodily aches, infertility, or even demonic forces.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an era without advanced medical knowledge, such items were vital sources of comfort and security for you and your loved ones.”<\/p>\n

According to the expert, the wearables were often used in Late Antiquity, especially in the eastern\u00a0Mediterranean<\/a>\u00a0world.<\/p>\n

This period roughly corresponds to the late third century to around the seventh century depending on location,\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0the Library of Congress Research Guides.<\/p>\n

\u201c[But the amulets] are much rarer in the western Roman world,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe discovery of this amulet in Germany suggests that Christian ideas had already begun to penetrate areas far from Christianity’s early centers of growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

By utilizing advanced\u00a0computer technology<\/a>\u00a0at the Leibniz Center for Archaeology (LEIZA) in Mainz, the amulet-like object has been digitally \u2018unrolled\u2019.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the arduous process Ivan Calandra, archaeologist at LEIZA, said: \u201cThe challenge in the analysis was that the silver sheet was rolled, but after around 1,800 years, it was of course also creased and pressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing CT, we were able to scan it at a very high resolution and create a 3D model.\u201d<\/p>\n

The process revealed 18-lines of text, dubbed the Frankfurt Silver Inscription, which has since been deciphered by Professor Markus Scholz, an archaeologist from Goethe University in Frankfurt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI called in experts from the history of theology, among others, and we approached the text together, piece by piece, and finally deciphered it,’ Professor Scholz said,\u00a0as per<\/a>\u00a0the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n

He added that the \u2018purely Christian\u2019 amulet showed that the man had been \u2018devout\u2019 in his faith.<\/p>\n

Before the Frankfurt Silver Inscription was discovered on the foil, evidence of Christianity between A.D 230 and 270 had not been found north of the Alps.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the unnamed man is being called the ‘first Christian north of the Alps’ by experts.<\/p>\n

Dr Ina Hartwig, Frankfurt’s head of culture and science, has hailed the find as \u2018extraordinary\u2019, musing that the discovery will \u2018keep science busy for a long time to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis affects archaeology as well as religious studies, philology and anthropology,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
