Yesterday, it was announced that Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor, the Irish singer-songwriter whose cover of Prince\u2019s \u2018Nothing Compares 2 U<\/em><\/a>\u2018 was one of the biggest hits of the \u201990s, died at 56.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sin\u00e9ad,\u201d her family said in a statement to\u00a0The Irish Times<\/a>. \u201cHer family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor received critical acclaim and worldwide success for her music, but she also struggled with mental health issues and was the center of numerous controversies due to her outspoken political and social views.<\/p>\n

Born in Dublin on December 8, 1966, O\u2019Connor had a difficult childhood and alleged that her mother was physically abusive, leaving her with lasting trauma and inspiring a lifelong advocacy for abused children. She was placed in an asylum for shoplifting and truancy issues when she was 15, and discovered a gift for music.<\/p>\n

She recorded her first album, 1987\u2019s\u00a0The Lion and the Cobra<\/em>, when she was 20. The album charted worldwide and earned O\u2019Connor a Grammy nomination.\u00a0Slant Magazine<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Pitchfork<\/a>\u00a0both listed it as one of the best albums of the 1980s, with Slant calling it \u201cone of the most electrifying debuts in rock history\u201d and Pitchfork praising the album\u2019s \u201cthemes of patriotism, sexuality, Catholicism, and social oppression set the stage for a career marked by a resolute sense of independence.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor achieved worldwide fame, acclaimed for her unique and expressive voice and recognizable for her distinct shaved head, which she said was an assertion against traditional views of women.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connor\u2019s follow-up album,\u00a0I Do Not Want What I Haven\u2019t Got<\/em>, released in 1990, was her biggest success, and included her cover of Prince\u2019s \u2018Nothing Compares 2 U<\/em>\u2018, her most famous and highest-charting recording. It was named the \u201c#1 World Single\u201d of 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards and frequently ranks on lists of the greatest songs of all time.<\/p>\n
