The Parent Trap\u2019 star is married to Laura Savoie<\/h2>\n

Dennis Quaid is \u201cgrateful to be alive\u201d after battling addiction.<\/p>\n

Quaid, who struggled with substance abuse\u00a0after a successful career start, opened up about going to rehab \u2013 \u201ccocaine school\u201d \u2013 and the \u201cwhite light experience\u201d that helped him make a change in his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful to still be here, I\u2019m grateful to be alive really every day,\u201d Quaid told People magazine in a recent interview. \u201cIt\u2019s important to really enjoy your ride in life as much as you can, because there\u2019s a lot of challenges and stuff to knock it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quaid checked into rehab after gaining fame in \u201cThe Right Stuff,\u201d \u201cBreaking Away\u201d and \u201cGreat Balls of Fire!.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember going home and having kind of a white light experience that I saw myself either dead or in jail or losing everything I had, and I didn\u2019t want that,\u201d the actor and musician explained to the outlet.<\/p>\n

For Quaid, his faith really helped play a part in his recovery. The actor began rereading the Bible and other religious texts in 1990 as he made his way back to sobriety, according to People.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when I started developing a personal relationship,\u201d Quaid noted. \u201cBefore that, I didn\u2019t have one, even though I grew up as a Christian.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor also wrote the song, \u201cOn My Way to Heaven,\u201d to show his mother that he was back on track and doing okay. Twenty-three years later, Quaid is releasing a new album,\u00a0\u201cFallen: A Gospel Record For Sinners.\u201d<\/p>\n

While reflecting on how his addiction shaped him as a person, Quaid noted that sobriety was getting back to \u201cthe joy of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a struggle,\u201d Quaid said of his addiction recovery. \u201cWe\u2019re all looking for the joy of life, and drugs give that to you and alcohol and whatever it is for anybody give that to you really quick. Then they\u2019re fun, and then they\u2019re fun with problems, and then they\u2019re just problems after a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s really what we\u2019re looking for, the joy of life, which is our gift, actually, the relationship with God that we all have. It\u2019s at the bottom of it, the joy of being alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quaid is currently\u00a0married to wife Laura Savoie\u00a0and is the \u201chappiest [he\u2019s] ever been.\u201d He is the father to three children; Jack, Thomas and Zoe.<\/p>\n
