Sure, the Prince and Princess of Wales have everything they need to do so, but life isn’t always that easy. Many people endure devastating losses as they lose their children, and now, Prince William wants to help those in grief. In a speech, the future king says there is a “growing need” for support for those who lose a child.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been fortunate. Despite Kate having hyperemesis gravidarum, which causes severe nausea and vomiting, during her pregnancies, their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, all came to the world healthy.

Sadly, that is not the case for everyone. Losing a child is one of the most painful things one can go through, and while William hasn’t lost a child, he knows the pain of losing a family member, especially at a young age, as his mother, Princess Diana, died when he was only 15 years old.

While he is doing his best to keep his mother’s legacy alive, he is also a patron of many charities, doing his best to help those in need. We’ll come to what William is doing with his children, like his mother did for him, a bit later.

Prince William went through a horrible tragedy when his mother died, and now, he wants to help those who have lost, especially their children. On Tuesday night, the Prince of Wales privately attended the 30th anniversary dinner for Child Bereavement UK.

They announced a merger with another leading charity, Winston’s Wish, which supports bereaved children, younger people, parents, and families in full.

William says grief is “the very worst pain”

As he praised the work of Child Bereavement UK, William also described grief as “the very worst pain” one can imagine. Further, the future king stated that it’s vital that children are getting the proper support through times of loss.

“Grief is the very worst pain any child or parent will ever endure, and while we cannot prevent these losses, we can ensure that every possible type of expert support and care is given to help rebuild the lives of those affected,” Prince William said in a statement. “In my sixteen years as patron of Child Bereavement UK, I have seen the life-changing impact of their work and how the support, care, and compassion provided protects the long-term health and wellbeing of those living with loss.”

He continued, “I have also seen the growing need for support of this kind, and it is because of this increasing demand that I am delighted that Child Bereavement UK and Winston’s Wish are joining forces to expand their impact. They have recognised that together they can do so much more, and I commend them both for taking this bold step to reach more people and help to reduce the long-term challenges that unresolved grief can cause.”

William has long been closely linked to Child Bereavement UK. The organisation was founded by Julia Samuel, a close friend of Princess Diana. Speaking to You Magazine, Julia praised William for his commitment. According to her, it’s safe to say that William is Diana’s son.

“He has deep empathy – that really comes across – which is why people feel better for meeting him,” Julia Samuel said. “He has the genuineness that Diana had. They can see it in his face and hear it in his voice. He is warm, but very direct, just as she was.”

How Prince William and Prince Harry found out about Diana’s passing

As mentioned, William, together with his brother, Prince Harry, and the rest of the Royal Family, went through a horrible tragedy when Diana passed away after a car accident in Paris in late August 1997.

While surgeons in Paris fought to keep “Lady Di” alive, far away, at Balmoral in Scotland, her two children, Prince William and Prince Harry, stayed with their father, King Charles, and their grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

William was born two years before Harry, but both brothers had a wonderful childhood. Their mother knew the importance of their future, but she also understood that they had to be given a childhood as close to normal as possible, even though they weren’t like other children. Later in life, Prince William and his wife, Kate, would apply this to their children’s upbringing.

When Princess Diana died, the royal family was, of course, in shock. Though Diana and Charles had divorced less than a year earlier, her eldest son, William, would one day become King, and Harry was tipped to have an essential role within the monarchy. The children—William and Harry—were asleep when the news broke. When they woke up, Queen Elizabeth II knew how important it was to protect the two princes.

She instructed her staff at Balmoral to let the young boys sleep in before telling them to hide all the TVs and radios in the Castle. Then, when they went to church the following morning, Her Majesty forbade everyone from mentioning Diana’s passing.

“Why has this happened to us?”

Harry claimed in his book Spare that his father “didn’t hug him” after Diana’s death. The two children were, of course, in shock and were devastated. Speaking in the documentary Diana, 7 Days, Prince William recalled how he felt “completely numb,” “disorientated,” and “dizzy” when the tragic news arrived.

“You feel very, very confused. And you keep asking yourself, ‘Why me?’ All the time, ‘Why? What have I done? Why? Why has this happened to us?’” William said.

“There’s nothing like it in the world,” he explained in the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. “There really isn’t. It’s like an earthquake has just run through the house and through your life and everything. Your mind is completely split. And it took me a while for it to actually sink in.”

Family members tried to talk to William and Harry about what had happened. The two had just lost their dear mother, and it was hard to grasp what had happened.

“The family came together, and Harry and I tried to talk as best we could about it,” he said in Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. “But being so small at that age, it was very difficult to communicate or understand your feelings. It’s… very complicated.”

On September 6, 1997, Princess Diana was laid to her final rest. An estimated 2.5 billion people watched the funeral, and viewers saw how the two young children, William and Harry, walked behind their mother’s coffin in the cortége. Later, Harry criticized the decision that they had to walk behind Diana’s

Prince William recalls the last memory of his mother

Princess Diana was buried at her family’s estate of Althorp, on a small island in the middle of the Oval Lake. Naturally, moving on was very hard. However, despite their immense sorrow, they tried to maintain a positive image towards the public and put on a brave face.

“Slowly, you try and rebuild your life, and you try and understand what’s happened, and I kept saying to myself that, you know, my mother would not want me to be upset,” William said. “She’d not want me to be down. She’d not want me to be like this. I kept myself busy as well—which is good and bad sometimes—but allows you to kind of get through that initial shock phase.”

Prince William had clearer memories of the call. He will never forget the last few heartbreaking words he uttered to his mother.

“The very last memory I have is a phone call from Balmoral. At the time, Harry and I were running around, minding our own business, playing with our cousins, and having a very good time,” William said. “Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say, ‘Goodbye, see you later, can I go off?’ If I’d known what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been quite so blasé about it. That phone call sticks in my mind quite heavily.”

How William is keeping his mother’s legacy alive

Despite the horrible car accident that took their mother’s life, William and Harry grew up into respectable men thanks to the love and support of their family. Still, and most likely for all days, they will continue to honor their mother’s legacy. William has taken after his mother when giving his children a valuable lesson that they are very fortunate, which Diana believed was very important.

“I must have been about 11, I think probably at the time. Maybe 10,” William said in the 2024 ITV Documentary Prince William: We Can End Homelessness. “I’d never been to anything like that before. And I was a bit anxious as to what to expect. My mother went about her usual part of making everyone feel relaxed and having a laugh and joking with everyone. I remember at the time kind of thinking, ‘Well, if everyone’s not got a home, they’re all going to be really sad.’ But it was incredible how happy an environment it was.”

He continued, “I remember having some good conversations just playing chess and chatting, and that’s when it dawned on me that there are other people out there who don’t have the same life as you do. When you’re quite small, you don’t really — you just think life is what you see in front of you. You don’t really have the concept to look elsewhere. And it’s when you meet people, like I did then, who put a different perspective in your head and say, like, ‘I was in the street last night.’ And you’re like, ‘Whoa,’ you know. It’s like — I remember that happening.”

“It’s the right thing to do”

Prince William is dedicated to fighting and erasing homelessness. He and his wife Kate have become synonymous with a modern Royal Family. They want their children to really understand how fortunate they are, and that there are people who aren’t.

“My mother introduced me to the cause of homelessness from quite a young age, and I’m really glad she did,” William told the Sunday Times in 2023. “I think when I can balance it with their schooling, they will definitely be exposed to it. On the school run, we talk about what we see. When we were in London, driving backwards and forwards, we regularly used to see people sitting outside supermarkets and we’d talk about it.”

He continued: “I’d say to the children, ‘Why are they there? What’s going on?’ I think it’s in all our interests, it’s the right thing to do, to expose the children, at the right stage, in the right dialogue, so they have an understanding.”

What do you think of Prince William?
