To say that Simon Cowell has made a name for himself is an understatement. However, even though he might have millions of dollars in the bank, it doesn\u2019t make him invincible or safe from injury. Some years ago, Cowell crashed his electirca\u00f6l bike, which put him in the hospital. In a new interview, he now reveals that it was so bad that he feared he\u2019d never walk again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Simon Cowell has created a fabulous life for himself. From first working at and later launching his own record labels, the now 65-year-old conquered the music business straight to the top. He is also the creator of\u00a0America\u2019s Got Talent<\/em>\u00a0and has served as a judge on the show for over 20 years.<\/p>\n

However, life can come at you quickly, something Simon Cowell has experienced as he went through something in 2020 that could have changed his life forever. He was involved in a serious accident as he fell off his electric bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu, California, and was taken to the hospital. He had to undergo surgery to repair a broken back.<\/p>\n

Cowell was \u201cdoing\u201d fine following the six-hour surgery, which included the placement of a metal rod. Things really could\u2019ve turned out way worse than they did. It forced him to miss the beginning of the season\u2019s live show\u00a0America\u2019s Got Talent<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome good advice\u2026 If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time,\u201d Cowell wrote on Twitter, now X, thanking fans and friends for their \u201ckind messages.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though his message seemed calming for his fans, things weren\u2019t really as good as he might\u2019ve said. Speaking with\u00a0ExtraTV<\/a>, Cowell explained that he was shocked once he saw the X-ray.<\/p>\n

Simon Cowell broke his back in 2020<\/h2>\n

\u201cI knew I\u2019d broken my back the minute I landed. It was really, really kind of sudden and it hurt,\u201d he said. \u201cIt could have been a lot worse. When I saw the X-ray, I really nearly could have smashed my spine to pieces, so I literally wouldn\u2019t have been able to walk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctors told him that he should lie down and rest, and he knew that he wasn\u2019t supposed to move. However, Cowell did the opposite. According to a\u00a0People<\/a>\u00a0source, he was walking around just two days after his surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was thinking, \u2018I\u2019ve got to get back into the house because I can\u2019t lie there\u2019, and made myself kind of get carried into my bedroom, which is right there at the beginning of the house, and I\u2019m lying there and I\u2019m kind of passing out\u2026 It was surreal,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Cowell had tested the new electric bike with son Eric. The hardest part for him was recovering from the accident at home, which he thought was embarrassing to do in front of his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so embarrassed about coming home looking about 100 because I couldn\u2019t walk, and I have these metal rods in my back and these screws,\u201d Cowell explained. \u201cI said, \u2018Lauren, I just don\u2019t know how to explain it to Eric.\u2019 She obviously said something to him because he came in and I was lying in bed and he said, \u2018Daddy, you\u2019re like Ironman,\u2019 and I thought that was the sweetest thing and it meant a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simon Cowell feared he would never walk again<\/h2>\n

It took about a year before Simon could walk again. While he was said to have tried walking just days after the accident, the recovery process was a nightmare as he struggled with \u201chelplessness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never been in this situation in my life where you literally can\u2019t move. The pain was off the charts,\u201d he told\u00a0People Magazine<\/a>\u00a0in 2021. \u201cBut you\u2019ve got to stay positive\u2026 I made a promise to myself I\u2019d be fitter than I was before I had the accident. Sure enough, that\u2019s what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simon Cowell has fully healed from the horrific accident and is enjoying life just as before. In early May, he appeared on the YouTube channel\u00a0How to Fail with Elizabeth Day<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and opened up about the accident.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to do the X-rays, and [my surgeon] showed me the X-ray, and I\u2019m like, \u2018God.\u2019 He said, \u2018Look, I\u2019m not gonna lie, Simon. Number one, I don\u2019t know if I can fix this, which means you probably won\u2019t walk. And secondly, the operation\u2019s going to take maybe 11 hours. So, stating the obvious, it could go wrong.\u2019 And at that moment I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, gosh.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Cowell described how the bike \u201cthrew me seven or eight feet in the air\u201d after he had pulled the throttle. The bike performed a so-called \u201cwheelie,\u201d and as soon as he landed on the ground, he knew, \u201cI\u2019ve broken my back.\u201d At first, Cowell assumed that since he could still move his fingers and toes, the injury wasn\u2019t too serious. However, things changed quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I kept thinking about was, you know, my family and everything. In that moment you kind of realize the most important thing is your health and don\u2019t do stupid things,\u201d Cowell said, laughing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually feel better than I did before the accident\u201d<\/h2>\n

While no one wants to break their back, in Simon Cowell\u2019s case, it appears as if it has brought something positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got to be honest with you, it wasn\u2019t that bad actually breaking your back,\u201d he told People some years ago. \u201cI mean it wasn\u2019t great for 3-4 weeks but after that you get through it, I had to do so much exercise now. I actually feel better than I did before the accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cowell continued by joking that \u201cif you want to feel healthier, break your back,\u201d and that the\u00a0America\u2019s Got Talent\u00a0<\/em>cast \u201chad a better time without me.\u201d<\/p>\n
