Known for clocking over 3,000 miles on his mountain bike through the rugged landscapes of Colorado and Utah, Dunbar was the picture of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/health\/\">health<\/a>\u00a0and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2023, that image was shattered.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-unexpected-pains\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unexpected pains<\/h2>\n<p>After completing a grueling cycling challenge in the mountains, Dunbar began feeling unexpected pain and swelling in one of his calves. At first, he thought it was a muscle strain from overexertion. But what seemed like a simple sports injury turned out to be something far more sinister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nurse came in\u2026she\u2019s like, hey, we think you have lung\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/cancer\/\">cancer<\/a>. Man, there\u2019s no way \u2013 no way I\u2019ve got lung cancer. I was doing 3000 miles on my mountain bike every season and my lungs are probably the healthiest piece of me,\u201d Dunbar said in a moving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/C4t2-a4AhMX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Instagram clip<\/a>\u00a0where he shares his journey after he was handed a life-shattering diagnosis of terminal lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Describing his reaction, the father of two shared, \u201cIt was surreal. It was denial. It was pissed off\u2026Get mad\u2026 How? Why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the diagnosis was real. And it was terminal.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-rare-genetic-mutation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rare genetic mutation<\/h2>\n<p>Dunbar, a loving husband and devoted father of two boys, was stunned. So was his family \u2013 the super active man appeared to be the epitome of health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNO, he was never a smoker. He didn\u2019t work in a mine. He\u2019s lived in clean-air Colorado and Utah,\u201d his brother-in-law, Jordan Reynolds, writes in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jordan.reyn\/posts\/10228646708904090?ref=embed_post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0post. \u201cChad was in the best shape of his life when the Stage 3 [now stage 4] lung cancer showed up at age 45. He was a legit athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-leading-cause-of-lung-cancer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leading cause of lung cancer<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/lung-cancer\/risk-factors\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CDC<\/a>), smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., responsible for 80% to 90% of related deaths. But rare gene mutations like RET can still trigger lung cancer in lifelong non-smokers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fphoto%2F%3Ffbid%3D10236359196135906%26set%3Da.4187859450668&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"438\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s aggressive, fast-growing, and often spreads silently before it\u2019s even detected.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-quickly-spread\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quickly spread<\/h2>\n<p>Doctors soon discovered that Dunbar\u2019s cancer was caused by RET \u2013 a rare genetic mutation \u2013 that often present with vague or misleading symptoms \u2013 like leg pain or swelling \u2013 making early diagnosis especially difficult.<\/p>\n<p>And by the time Dunbar\u2019s cancer was discovered, it had already spread \u2013 to his brain, liver, bones, and lymph nodes near his heart.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-big-improvement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Big improvement\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>After his shocking diagnosis, Dunbar initially responded well to an aggressive treatment plan. Doctors prescribed a combination of targeted therapies \u2013 designed to attack cancer cells carrying the RET mutation \u2013 along with standard chemotherapy, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-14606561\/never-smoker-lung-cancer-sign-leg-shock.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n<p>And, for a while, it looked like the tide was turning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig Improvement,\u201d Dunbar said about his scans in the summer of 2023. \u201cI had six spots in my brain that went down, three spots of my ribs they couldn\u2019t find, spots of my liver had gone down, and the main tumor in my lung had continued to shrink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking, \u2018man, I\u2019m feeling good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But RET-positive lung cancer is relentless.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-passenger-mutation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Passenger mutation\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In March 2024, Dunbar shared a heartbreaking update. A new \u201cpassenger mutation\u201d had developed in his brain and liver \u2013 changes that made treatment even more difficult. Doctors gave him just a 5% chance of surviving more than five years.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with devastating odds, Dunbar refused to let fear win: \u201cMy doctors gave me a 5% chance living over five years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>After allowing himself a \u201cpity party,\u201d he decided to fight and \u201cenjoy every minute\u201d he has with his sons Walker and Noah, and wife Allyson.<\/p>\n<p>Dunbar adds, \u201cHey, you know what? Freaking 5%, I\u2019ll take those odds. Every day is a battle. Hang on for one more day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-dunbar-dies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dunbar dies<\/h2>\n<p>Sadly, on June 25, 2025, Dunbar\u2019s battle with cancer came to an end.<\/p>\n<p>According to a tribute shared on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/everloved.com\/life-of\/chad-dunbar\/obituary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ever Loved<\/a>, \u201cAfter his final appointment in mid-June,\u201d the family was told \u201cthe cancer had spread rapidly and that treatment would no longer be effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo know Chad was to love Chad. His smile, dimples, and genuine interest in others were what you noticed most. Tall, brown-eyed, and known for his thick, beautiful brown hair, Chad was incredibly handsome, funny, smart, and kind. He was only 47, and way too young,\u201d the message shared.<\/p>\n<p>His heartbreaking story serves as a powerful reminder that lung cancer doesn\u2019t only affect smokers.
