{"id":16948,"date":"2025-12-28T21:20:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T21:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=16948"},"modified":"2025-12-28T21:20:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-28T21:20:18","slug":"gang-finds-unusually-spiky-creatures-in-nest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=16948","title":{"rendered":"Gang finds unusually spiky creatures in nest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>There is now hope for a species that was on the brink of extinction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A group of researchers in Australia is thrilled after their efforts to propagate the species seem to have succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, ecologists at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.australianwildlife.org\/where-we-work\/mt-gibson-wildlife-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a>\u00a0in Australia made a stunning discovery.<\/p>\n<p>In the sanctuary, they found a litter of newborn and spiky little creatures.<\/p>\n<p>But these are not just any creatures. They belong to the species \u201cwestern quolls,\u201d which are a specific type of marsupial carnivore.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the species was scattered throughout Australia, but since the first Europeans began populating Australia, the population of the species has dramatically declined.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41168\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/08091906\/chudith.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/08091906\/chudith.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/08091906\/chudith-768x696.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"928\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_quoll#\/media\/File:Chuditch_at_Caversham_Wildlife_Park.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wikipedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nowadays, the western quolls, also known as chuditchs, are only found in the southwestern corner of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Australia<\/a>, and only in small clusters.<\/p>\n<p>This species of marsupial grows to about the size of a cat and plays a significant role in the ecosystem. They help control populations of smaller invertebrates, as well as certain reptiles and birds.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-new-hope\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">New hope<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past few months, researchers have been working to reintroduce the marsupials to the Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary, an area where they had previously been extinct.<\/p>\n<p>Now, with the recent discovery of baby marsupials, it\u2019s clear that the researchers have succeeded. He is one of our largest and most striking quolls with a personality to match \u2013 often making rounds of multiple sites to collect the chicken we use as lures and disrupting our bait canisters,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What joy to see hope for the species!
