It\u2019s hard to imagine anyone but\u00a0Richard Gere<\/a>\u00a0playing Prince Charming to\u00a0Julia Robert\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0damsel in distress in the modern-day Cinderella story,\u00a0Pretty Woman<\/em>. Gere melted hearts when in the final scene, his character Edward conquers his fear of heights and climbs the fire escape to rescue Roberts\u2019 Vivian, who\u2019s waiting at the top of her proverbial tower.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What most people don\u2019t know is that Charles Grodin was a frontrunner for playing Edward, and it was Roberts who convinced Gere to play the role in the timeless classic that he wasn\u2019t sure he wanted to star.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the cast of the classic 1990 romantic comedy\u00a0Pretty Woman\u00a0<\/em>reunited in 2015, some secrets were spilled.<\/p>\n

The film, starring a 21-year-old\u00a0Julia Roberts<\/a>, who at the time had appeared in\u00a0Mystic Pizza<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Steel Magnolias<\/em>, and\u00a0Richard Gere<\/a>, an already established sex symbol, was originally intended to have a dark storyline, called 3000.<\/p>\n

The original script followed the life of drug addicted prostitute, who at the end is tossed out of the limousine, onto her back on the street, with Edward throwing her $3,000 in earnings on her body before driving away.<\/p>\n

Then\u00a0Garry Marshall<\/a>, the legendary producer and screenwriter, stepped in as director, and it was taken over by Disney, transforming the film into the fairy tale that generations still love.<\/p>\n

Still, Gere wasn\u2019t interested in starring in the film and said no, \u201ca few times.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a part, it was just nothing. It was a suit, you can put a suit on a goat and put it out there, and it would work,\u201d said Gere, who\u2019s now 73. \u201cI didn\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marshall, who was also interested in casting actor Charles Grodin\u2013known for\u00a0Midnight Run<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Heartbreak Kid<\/em>\u2013was still hoping for Gere.<\/p>\n
