But the near-death experience was not from the cancer itself but something entirely different.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after she had her chemotherapy treatment on 3 August, Dowden went with her parents for a walk. \u201cThe Strictly producers were checking in on me, and I was sending videos of me on my walk. I couldn\u2019t believe how good I was feeling,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-d5841eea94da6aa4c9ba59d379b68fb1\" class=\"newsner-d5841eea94da6aa4c9ba59d379b68fb1 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-16117281\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-135404 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/09\/01095653\/shutterstock_1532075132.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"511\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/09\/01095653\/shutterstock_1532075132.jpg\" data-eio-rwidth=\"667\" data-eio-rheight=\"1000\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But when they got home from the walk, the good mood evaporated as Dowden\u2019s health took a turn for the worse and her parents called an ambulance for their daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother Gillian recalled, \u201cAmy\u2019s symptoms got worse very, very quickly. At one point she felt OK, then suddenly she felt very ill \u2013 it happened in an instant.\u201d She went on, \u201cShe went to stand, then just sort of crumpled back on to the settee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ambulance staff took her to a hospital where she was placed in intensive care. The\u00a0Latin and ballroom dancers learned then what had gone wrong. She was being treated for her high temperature and other symptoms when doctors figured out what was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cve7_9lI_Kh\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=640&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fen.newsner.com&amp;rp=%2Fnews%2Famy-dowden-reveals-news-about-second-battle-with-cancer-and-it-was-life-threatening%2F#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A665.9000000022352%7D\" height=\"1238\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe doctors and nurses were telling me I had sepsis and that it was life-threatening,\u201d she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellomagazine.com\/celebrities\/501033\/strictly-come-dancing-amy-dowden-sepsis-battle-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">revealed in an interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-409a2b7d542ec88c2ddae0fb8287f0cf\" class=\"newsner-409a2b7d542ec88c2ddae0fb8287f0cf newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1262087963\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>She had been \u201cvery unlucky\u201d to have contracted the infection while she was undergoing treatment for her breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Sepsis can be deadly for even otherwise healthy people but even more so for those who are undergoing treatment that suppresses the immune system. This, of course, includes those undergoing chemotherapy. And to add to worries, Dowden also has Crohn\u2019s disease, an inflammatory condition.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-135403 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/09\/01095649\/shutterstock_1532075129.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/09\/01095649\/shutterstock_1532075129.jpg\" data-eio-rwidth=\"667\" data-eio-rheight=\"1000\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She said, \u201cI just thought it was my reaction to chemo but, as it turned out, I had already got an infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn chemo, you don\u2019t have your white blood cells to fight infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-0f5f11e723cfe098b0c583700c6e2c0b\" class=\"newsner-0f5f11e723cfe098b0c583700c6e2c0b newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-985110331\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/dancing\/\">dancing<\/a>\u00a0legend reunited with the ambulance staff that transported her to the hospital and saved her life. She posted about the \u201cscary ordeal\u201d on her social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was glad to be able to thank them for saving my life,\u201d she said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>The reality competition star added, \u201cIt was really good to shake their hands and thank them personally; they\u2019re a credit to the service.
