The cause of Jimmy Buffett\u2019s death over the weekend has finally been revealed, seemingly confirming the sad rumors.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The iconic singer had been \u201cbattling Merkel Cell Skin Cancer for four years,\u201d as per an official obituary published on his website.<\/p>\n

Merkel cell carcinoma is an exceedingly uncommon ailment in which malignant (cancerous) cells form in the skin, as stated by the\u00a0National Cancer Institute<\/a>. The website also mentions that \u201csun exposure and having a weak immune system can affect the risk of Merkel cell carcinoma.\u201d<\/p>\n

The obituary made a point of mentioning that Buffett \u201ccontinued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July.\u201d<\/p>\n

The renowned \u2018Margaritaville<\/em>\u2018 icon passed away on September 1 at his residence in Sag Harbor, Long Island. He was 76 years old.<\/p>\n

According to a statement posted on his website and social media accounts, he died peacefully surrounded by his family, friends, music, and beloved dogs.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n

He leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Jane Slagsvol, and their three children, Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron.<\/p>\n
