The hot dogs are being hung out to dry.<\/p>\n

The much anticipated annual Nathan\u2019s Hot Dog Eating Contest for the men\u2019s division was called off Tuesday afternoon due to lightning storms hanging over Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

Hundreds had gathered at Coney Island in front of the iconic Nathan\u2019s flagship restaurant to\u00a0cheer for Joey Chestnut<\/a>\u00a0to claim his 16th victory at the event.<\/p>\n

But following the women\u2019s match this morning, where\u00a0Miki Sudo secured her ninth win\u00a0<\/a>with 39 hot dogs, rain and lightning strikes put an end to the Fourth of July tradition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very disappointed to tell you that after speaking to the NYPD, we have to dismiss the crowd and the competition is not going to happen. It\u2019s too much of a lightning risk,\u201d contest officials told spectators.<\/p>\n

The crowd, however, was frustrated with the decision, booing at the organizers and yelling, \u201cThis is bull\u2013.\u201d<\/p>\n
