Fans of prestige TV and NBA drama may have been disappointed by\u00a0HBO’s cancellation of\u00a0Winning Time<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but Los Angeles Lakers legend\u00a0Magic Johnson<\/a>\u00a0wasn’t among them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The five-time NBA champ, whose years as the face of the Showtime-era Lakers were at the center of the\u00a0Adam McKay<\/a>-produced series, recently\u00a0told\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that he “never watched” the show because “nobody in this world can tell the Lakers story.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He added, “The Showtime story? Nobody! Dr. [Jerry] Buss was way ahead of his time as an owner. Our team? Unbelievable! The Laker Girls with\u00a0Paula Abdul<\/a>? Unbelievable! Nobody can tell that story.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Johnson, who was played by newcomer Quincy Isaiah on\u00a0Winning Time<\/em>, went on to say that his former teammates and associates also hadn’t seen the show, which ran for two seasons and bore the subtitle\u00a0The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty<\/em>. “None of us watched it because it was fictional,” he said. “You just can’t tell that story. But, hey, that’s on them.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
