What usually matters most is the courage and determination with which we face those difficulties, and the importance of remembering that it is\u00a0<em>never\u00a0<\/em>too late to turn things around.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ginny Burton knows a thing or two about that, believe you me. Her incredible story of hardship and eventual triumph was recently published by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/news\/nation-world\/from-12-year-old-meth-addict-to-honors-college-scholar-the-redemption-of-ginny-burton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Local12 News<\/a>, and boy does it make for good reading.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-dfe283c1364b7c3381ae964047a808b8\" class=\"newsner-dfe283c1364b7c3381ae964047a808b8 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/news\/nation-world\/from-12-year-old-meth-addict-to-honors-college-scholar-the-redemption-of-ginny-burton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">As per Local12\u2019s Eric Johnson<\/a>, he first came upon Ginny several years ago, while researching the epidemic of homelessness that had gripped Seattle, and so many other places across the United States.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-264b6df9d640a3b3103bdb5a0ae40939\" class=\"newsner-264b6df9d640a3b3103bdb5a0ae40939 newsner-taboola_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI walked into a men\u2019s shelter called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ccsww.org\/get-help\/shelter-homeless-services\/lazarus-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lazarus Day Center<\/a>, run by Catholic Community Services,\u201d Eric wrote. \u201cI don\u2019t know what I was looking for. I just wanted to talk to somebody and learn.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-451c51cba0d3e34338144aefdee7dba0\" class=\"newsner-451c51cba0d3e34338144aefdee7dba0 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI introduced myself to a woman who was working there. She had long hair and seemed tired. She was being pulled in about five different directions and seemed a little suspicious, but she stepped outside and talked to me for a few minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-80366 lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/05205635\/b82f5a56-7342-4a2c-a88f-f98ee9c25ac5-medium16x9_Ginny6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/05205635\/b82f5a56-7342-4a2c-a88f-f98ee9c25ac5-medium16x9_Ginny6.jpg\" data-eio-rwidth=\"648\" data-eio-rheight=\"365\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit \/ King County Jail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That woman turned out to be Ginny Burton.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/news\/nation-world\/from-12-year-old-meth-addict-to-honors-college-scholar-the-redemption-of-ginny-burton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">As per Local12<\/a>, Eric once again met Ginny two years later, after calling Lazarus to see if she still worked there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-596425462\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen she called I said, \u2018I don\u2019t know why, but I think I need to talk to you again\u2026&#8217;\u201d Eric wrote.<\/p>\n<p>It was then that she explained her life story, which included being born to a mother who was a drug addict and dealer who suffered from mental illness. Her father, meanwhile, was sent to prison when she was just four after committing a series of armed robberies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-f78e888c54e720ed27be5081771d3ee5\" class=\"newsner-f78e888c54e720ed27be5081771d3ee5 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>As a result of her troubled childhood, Ginny was smoking marijuana by age six. Two children and an abusive marriage later, Ginny became addicted to heroin when she was 23.<\/p>\n<p>Ginny told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/news\/nation-world\/from-12-year-old-meth-addict-to-honors-college-scholar-the-redemption-of-ginny-burton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Local12<\/a>: \u201cI am that person. I have 17 felony convictions. I am the person you used to clutch your bag when I walked by you. I am the person that would randomly attack somebody in public. I was not a savory person. Everybody was a victim, and everybody was prey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for her life on the street, which consisted of her and a male accomplice robbing Mexican drug dealers at gun point, she continued:<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-a488fc8b4dc36d4f0c58a28c21cf7260\" class=\"newsner-a488fc8b4dc36d4f0c58a28c21cf7260 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-279108355\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re stuck on the street and you smell like feces and you haven\u2019t showered in forever and you can\u2019t make it into a social service during working hours because you\u2019re too busy trying to feed your addiction, and your addiction is bigger than you\u2026 and you\u2019ve compromised your integrity a number of times over and over and over again, and you\u2019re starting to be victimized by the people on the street\u2026 you\u2019re hopeless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t stand your life. You would rather be dead than alive. Her last trip to prison was in 2008, where she was locked away for 33 months.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-2129561472\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>After managing to stay clean for six months after she got out, she eventually relapsed. Then she was arrested on December 5, 2012, for the final time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-370781a11f10ea164c13c9e6153824bc\" class=\"newsner-370781a11f10ea164c13c9e6153824bc newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI was in a stolen truck,\u201d she told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/local12.com\/news\/nation-world\/from-12-year-old-meth-addict-to-honors-college-scholar-the-redemption-of-ginny-burton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Local12<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA really slow one. I pulled out and a cop turned on the lights to pull me over for a light that was out. I took off and he chased me. I almost crashed into a tree in front of an apartment building. And that was it. that was the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1941063497\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Only, it wasn\u2019t the end. It was there that she got the idea and inspiration to go to school.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1469395712\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>She said: \u201cIt made me recognize how much time I had wasted in my life. And I also recognized that I was actually good at learning. something I enjoyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having taken classs at South Seattle College, Ginny would go on to apply to the University of Washington. In 2019, she was awarded a Martin Honor Scholarship to the UW.<\/p>\n<p>At 47 years old, Ginny studied political science, and she excelled.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-02c2f8ded0549c819555c38353d41618\" class=\"newsner-02c2f8ded0549c819555c38353d41618 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-380133122\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Recently, she uploaded two side-by-side photos to mark two extraordinarily different periods of her life. One, a mugshot from King County Jail in 2005, shows her at her lowest. Maybe I can be some kind of Pied Piper, to help peoprecover their own lives. That\u2019s what I care about. There are some days that I wish I could just slip away here, with a garden, and open up a little cafe. But in reality I know it\u2019s my job to continue to create hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What a breathtakingly beautiful story.
