A young mom packed her son a well-balanced lunch, or so she thought. Shockingly, the school sent it home and claimed it was \u201cunhealthy,\u201d leaving the mother baffled.<\/h3>\n

Laura Lee knows that getting a young child to eat healthily can be a challenge, but the young mother thought she was doing a good job. She was stunned when her 2-year-old son\u2019s nursery school seemingly disagreed, sending back home a portion of the meal for being \u201ctoo unhealthy.\u201d\u00a0Their reason shocked Laura and even made her a bit angry.<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s understandable that there is concern surrounding the amount of sugars that kids consume, Laura Lee feels this school went too far, and others seem to agree.\u00a0\u201cI sent my 2.5 yr old son to school with this and the cookies got sent home because they\u2019re unhealthy,\u201d Laura Lee wrote, accompanying the remark with a photo of the lunch she had packed for her toddler. \u201cThere was 3 MINI cookies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her comment was made in response to a\u00a0Plymouth Live<\/a>\u00a0story posted on\u00a0Facebook<\/a>. In the article,\u00a0teachers talked about the most unhealthy school lunches they had witnessed from their students. When\u00a0Cornwall Live<\/a>\u00a0posted the story, the page asked its readers to\u00a0submit their own examples of terrible school lunches they had seen.\u00a0But, Laura Lee went a different route, pointing out a lunch that she felt shouldn\u2019t have been a problem.<\/p>\n

It was obvious the mother put a lot of effort into packing for her son since the meal included\u00a0cucumber slices with the middles cut out into cute little flower shapes.\u00a0To most, the lunch would seem pretty healthy with two compartments full of fresh vegetables.\u00a0So, the question becomes, if the toddler eats some of the rest of the lunch, are three mini cookies really a big deal?<\/p>\n

When I went to school, lunches often came with a dessert, and it wasn\u2019t always fruit either. Should all sweet desserts and sugars now be forbidden? Perhaps this is a case of a few bad apples ruining the entire bushel.\u00a0\u201cI work in a nursery and believe me, I have seen some terrible packed lunches in the past!\u201d one commenter said in response\u00a0to Laura Lee, proving that what\u2019s packed in lunches has been a problem. Expressing their shock that anyone could consider Laura\u2019s lunch unhealthy, he added, \u201cThis looks perfect to me!\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, black and white rules are easiest to enforce. So, it\u2019s possible the school decided \u201cno cookies\u201d in response to \u201cterrible packed lunches\u201d they were seeing. We can only speculate. Regardless, viewers didn\u2019t see an issue with what Laura Lee packed for her son.\u00a0\u201cLooks like you took time and effort to his lunch \u2018fun\u2019 and appealing,\u201d wrote Susan McGowan. \u201cAbsolute rubbish that he wasn\u2019t allowed to get those small cookies. Everything in moderation surely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others pointed out that the lunches served by the schools are often much less healthy than the one seen in Laura Lee\u2019s photo. \u201cAmazing, when a child\u2019s free school lunch can have a syrup sponge and custard for a pudding,\u201d Stephanie Hughes said.<\/p>\n

Laura Lee isn\u2019t the only parent who\u2019s been shocked by what their child\u2019s school returned after deeming it \u201cunhealthy\u201d either. After saying the meal \u201clooks great and well balanced,\u201d\u00a0Christina Robinson admitted, \u201cMy son\u2019s drink got sent home because it was fizzy, it was sparkling water.\u201d<\/p>\n

After decades of advertising sugary foods with campaigns aimed at children, the pendulum has swung the other way as a movement\u00a0geared toward getting kids to\u00a0eat healthier food<\/a>\u00a0has taken root. Schools have responded by encouraging\u00a0both kids and parents to choose\u00a0healthy lunches with more veggies and other nutritious options instead of the heavily sweetened treats children tend to prefer.<\/p>\n

As a result, some schools have taken extra steps, monitoring the content of parent-packed lunches and prohibiting certain foods, which seems to be exactly what happened in Laura Lee\u2019s case. Many parents, however, don\u2019t support their children\u2019s school taking on such a role. \u201cSchools should concentrate on teaching and not being the lunch box police,\u201d wrote one commenter. \u201cNo good being skinny [and] fit but finish school knowing nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s commendable to want children to be healthy, of course, but does it have to be all or nothing? Isn\u2019t moderation the key? It seems a blanketed ban does leave\u00a0very\u00a0little grey area and is the course of action some have chosen to take in order to make enforcement easier.<\/p>\n

Along those lines, an anonymous individual pointed out, \u201cI think parents often forget their child is not the only one in the school, and\u00a0rules<\/a>\u00a0are implemented to make everything work as well as possible.\u201d But, easier to enforce doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s always what\u2019s best. As a treat at the end of a meal, are a few cookies a big deal?<\/p>\n
