Mary Lou Retton<\/a>\u00a0is speaking out for the first time since she was hospitalized for a life-threatening illness.<\/p>\n

The former Olympian took to\u00a0Instagram<\/a>\u00a0Monday to share a statement about her current condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m beyond blessed to have the opportunity to make this statement,\u201d she began. \u201cI am overwhelmed with all the love and support from the world as I fight. I am forever grateful to you all!\u201d<\/p>\n

The 55-year-old mother of four added that in due time she would update fans about her \u201chealth issues\u201d in hopes that she could help others who find themselves facing a similar battle.<\/p>\n

Retton was hospitalized earlier this month for a \u201cvery rare\u201d form of pneumonia.<\/p>\n

Her daughter McKenna Kelley asked for the public\u2019s help with paying for her mother\u2019s medical bills as Retton fought for her life in the ICU.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is not able to breathe on her own. She\u2019s been in the ICU for over a week now. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details. However, I will disclose that she is not insured,\u201d she explained on a\u00a0SpotFund campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As of October 30 more than $450,000 has been raised.<\/p>\n

Retton\u2019s other daughter, Shayla Shrepfer, also kept fans updated on her mother\u2019s condition during her two-week hospitalization.<\/p>\n

While their family was initially happy with the progress Retton had been making, the former Olympian experienced a \u201cpretty scary setback.\u201d However, days after the setback Retton was discharged from the hospital and allowed to return home.<\/p>\n
