{"id":4731,"date":"2023-11-08T12:58:49","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T12:58:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=4731"},"modified":"2023-11-08T12:58:49","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T12:58:49","slug":"born-without-a-nose-heres-what-tessa-evans-looks-like-at-10-says-she-loves-her-new-nose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/used82.com\/?p=4731","title":{"rendered":"Born without a nose, here\u2019s what Tessa Evans looks like at 10 \u2014 says she loves her new nose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Fittingly born on Valentine\u2019s Day in 2013, Tessa Evans, the girl who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/family\/parents-refuse-to-abort-deformed-baby-when-doctors-ask-2-years-later-just-look-at-him-now\/\">born<\/a>\u00a0without a nose, is showered with love and praise each day by her family and people across the globe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tessa, whose\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/news\/duck-dynastys-missy-robertson-reveals-devastating-news\/\">condition<\/a>\u00a0is so rare that there are fewer than 100 cases worldwide, is praised by her mother for her \u201ccharming\u201d personality and \u201cinfallible courage.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eight years since she became the first human to get nasal implants, Tessa is powering through and living her best life, refusing to let her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/celebrity\/rocky-dennis-story-pictures-film-mask-actor-today\/\">condition<\/a>\u00a0stop her \u201cfrom doing anything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After a normal pregnancy with no signs of any abnormalities, Grainne and Nathan Evans were shocked to see their Valentine\u2019s Day newborn was born without a nose.<\/p>\n<p>Tessa, from Maghera, Ireland, has Bosma\u00a0arhinia\u00a0microphthalmia syndrome (BAMS), meaning she was born without a nose. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10032420\/#:~:text=Bosma%20arhinia%20microphthalmia%20syndrome%20(BAMS)%20is%20a%20rare%20condition%2C,aplasia%20of%20the%20external%20nose.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>, the condition is so rare that there are fewer than 100 cases reported in medical history.<\/p>\n<p>And because the condition is so rare, it\u2019s not an easy fix.<\/p>\n<p>For Tessa, it means she has no sense of smell and no sinuses, but she can still cough, sneeze and catch a cold.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\" lazyloaded\" width=\"500\" height=\"498\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fbornwithoutanose%2Fphotos%2Fa.735750266481694%2F1475399229183457%2F%3Ftype%3D3&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=500\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was funny the very first time she sneezed, but we actually found out that it actually comes from your chest,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-foyle-west-33090938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">said her dad<\/a>, Nathan. \u201cHowever, having that wee bit of normality was quite nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first few weeks of Tessa\u2019s life were difficult. She spent five weeks in intensive care, and when she was less than two weeks old, she had surgery to create a second airway with a tracheostomy tube, allowing her to eat and sleep properly.<\/p>\n<p>When Tessa was only two, she became the first ever person to have a cosmetic nasal implant fitted to help create the missing appendage.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, people who need a nasal prosthesis have the procedure done when they are a\u00a0teenager,\u00a0when the face has stopped growing.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe id=\"instagram-embed-0\" class=\"instagram-media instagram-media-rendered\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CyiTa4HMOKI\/embed\/captioned\/?cr=1&amp;v=14&amp;wp=640&amp;rd=https%3A%2F%2Fen.newsner.com&amp;rp=%2Fnews%2Fborn-without-a-nose-heres-what-tessa-evans-looks-like-at-10-says-she-loves-her-new-nose%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1ogZri0i3qaEe7wFoe4C88ClQr0_AL0VMyWVWO-hppkbchzf14aa6eNQo#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A1026.2000000001863%7D\" height=\"964\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-instgrm-payload-id=\"instagram-media-payload-0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Her parents explained they had the procedure done while she was young to hopefully avoid more invasive surgeries in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an incredibly difficult decision for all of us, we love Tessa so much and thought she was completely beautiful the way she was,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-3108960\/Two-year-old-born-NO-NOSE-pioneering-cosmetic-surgery-new-one-built.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Grainne said<\/a>. \u201cWe ultimately decided to go ahead as it was a chance to gradually change her appearance over the years and to normalise her profile without ever cutting her face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The surgery on Tessa\u2019s face will not be completed until her teenage years, and Grainne describes the long-term process: \u201cThey say once they have the final, nuanced nose in place that they will then get a medical tattoo artist to tattoo in light and shade to make the more detailed contours of her nose.\u201d She added, \u201cThey can then dimple in the nostrils and shade them to look real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the difficult decision was made, Grainne, a mother of three, longed to be at her baby\u2019s side every minute while she was recovering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very stressful though, as I had never spent a night apart from Tessa, and it was quite soul-destroying to leave her side each evening at 11 p.m.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.ie\/fabulous\/1978000\/inspirational-irish-tot-continues-defying-the-odds-after-being-born-without-a-nose\/#:~:text=So%20at%20two,for%20our%20girl.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Grianne continued<\/a>, \u201cI was comforted by the fact I was a phone call away and could be there in just a few minutes. Whatever happened, I would be by her side when she woke up the next day. But Tessa, now 10, stays strong and cheery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really can\u2019t wait for a new nose, it\u2019s going to make me really happy. My BAMs syndrome will not stop me from doing anything,\u201d Tessa said two years ago. \u201cIt\u2019s disappointing that I can\u2019t smell the good smells but it\u2019s awesome that I can\u2019t smell the bad smells,\u201d the sweet girls adds with a giggle.<\/p>\n<p>Now that Tessa is getting older, Grainne adds that her energy is getting brighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day she inspires me with her zest for life and infallible courage.
