According to\u00a0New York Post<\/a>, \u201cthe much-praised\u00a0The Power of the Dog<\/em>\u00a0stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a closeted gay rancher in 1925 Montana who\u2019s abusive toward his new sister-in-law and her son.\u201d When asked for his thoughts about the provocative Netflix movie that\u00a0won<\/a>\u00a0the Golden Globe for Best Picture, Elliott made it clear that he didn\u2019t agree with the praise. \u201cYou want to talk about that piece of sh-t?\u201d the\u00a0Tombstone<\/em>\u00a0star asked.<\/p>\n Elliott took offense with the film\u2019s characters, who he compared to Chippendales dancers \u201cwho wear bowties and not much else.\u201d He\u00a0added<\/a>, \u201cThat\u2019s what all these f\u2014king cowboys in that movie looked like. They\u2019re all running around in chaps and no shirts. There are all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the f\u2014king movie.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think that\u2019s what the movie\u2019s about,\u201d Maron\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0of the film. It\u2019s more than heavily implied that the fictional rancher character Phil Burbank, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is a repressed gay man. Unimpressed, Elliott then went on to discuss Jane Campion, the director who hails from New Zealand. He felt she was out of her element in tackling this particular genre.<\/p>\n \u201cI love her previous work, but what the f\u2014k does this woman from down there, New Zealand, know about the American West?\u201d Elliott\u00a0fumed<\/a>, further criticizing Campion\u2019s decision to shoot the Western in her home country. However, what really \u201cchapped\u201d Elliott\u2019s hide was the film\u2019s overall depiction of the American West and cowboy culture. The\u00a0We Were Soldiers<\/em>\u00a0star blasted Campion\u00a0saying,<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWhy in the f\u2014k does she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say, \u2018This is the way it was.\u2019 That rubbed me the wrong way, pal.\u201d<\/p>\n Elliott wasn\u2019t finished with his critique, reminding listeners that his western,\u00a01883<\/em>, was filmed in the Lone Star State. \u201cThe myth is that they were these macho men out there with the cattle. I just come from f\u2014king Texas where I was hanging out with families, not men, but families, big, long, extended, multiple-generation families\u2026 and their lives were all about being cowboys,\u201d Elliott\u00a0declared<\/a>\u00a0in an attempt to bolster his case that Campion got the cowboy lifestyle completely wrong. \u201cAnd, boy, when I saw that [movie], I thought, \u2018What the f\u2014k? Where are we in this world today?’\u201d<\/p>\n The rugged actor, who is best known for his roles as cowboys, also slammed how the main character, who was a rancher in Montana, was portrayed. \u201cWhere\u2019s the Western in this Western?\u201d Elliott\u00a0asked.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI mean, Cumberbatch never got out of his f\u2014king chaps. He had two pairs of chaps \u2014 a woolly pair and a leather pair. And every time he would walk in from somewhere \u2014 he never was on a horse, maybe once \u2014 he\u2019d walk into the house, storm up the stairs, go lay in his bed in his chaps and play his banjo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Many took issue with Elliott\u2019s explicit-laced criticism, including Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer. \u201cI mean most movies about the American West don\u2019t know anything about the American West including the ones\u00a0<\/span>Sam Elliott<\/span>\u00a0has been a part of. They erase the presence of anyone who isn\u2019t white or male when the west was mostly built by Indigenous, Black, Mexican & Chinese people,\u201d she\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Elliott\u2019s comments didn\u2019t sit well with others on social media. One person\u00a0tweeted<\/a>, \u201cHoly s\u2014 do I like Sam Elliott a lot less now. This is some barely even trying to hide it homophobic, misogynistic, xenophobic s\u2014,\u201d they added while\u00a0another wrote<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cJust in! Sam Elliott reinforces the whole message of the film in accidental endorsement of Power of the Dog. Which is that cowboy culture hasn\u2019t changed one bit and is still rife with toxic masculinity\/homophobia.\u201d<\/p>\n Most Americans, however, don\u2019t seem to like the new \u201cwoke\u201d themes seen throughout recent shows and films. In fact, ratings for Hollywood\u2019s award ceremonies have suffered in recent years. For example, in 2021, the Academy Awards\u00a0saw only<\/a>\u00a09.85 million viewers, which was a nearly 59% drop from the 23.6 million viewers that turned on their TVs for the program in 2020.
