Legendary singer Cher has been defended by fans following her Thanksgiving Parade performance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This week,\u00a0US residents<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Canadian<\/a>\u00a0natives are celebrating the holiday season by honouring friends and family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

While practising peace and harmony is a good place to start, Thanksgiving is often also an excuse to\u00a0stuff yourself silly<\/a> and dig into a slice of pumpkin pie\u2026 or five.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Another staple of the season is the annual Macy\u2019s Thanksgiving Day Parade in\u00a0New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This year, the 3.5-hour celebration featured 16 character balloons – including\u00a0Kung Fu Panda<\/em>\u00a0and the Pillsbury Doughboy – as well as performances from Jon Batiste and Cher, 77.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At the parade on Thursday (23 November), the latter performed her new Yuletide-inspired single,\u00a0DJ Play a\u00a0<\/em>Christmas<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Song<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, the show – which was set on a silver stage – has received\u00a0backlash online<\/a>\u00a0from fans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Many\u00a0NBC<\/a>\u00a0viewers took issue and have claimed that the iconic singer was performing a lip sync to the new track.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

One X (formerly\u00a0Twitter<\/a>) user wrote: \u201cI mean couldn\u2019t she have tried a little harder to sell the lipsync?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Another commented: \u201cShout out to Cher to not even pretend to live sing. If you’re going to lip sync, at least embrace the full auto-tune and camp of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen a worse lip sync than Cher right now,\u201d said a third.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However, many more users rushed to the platform to celebrate the star\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A second wrote: \u201cThanksgiving day parade is \u2026Slaying this year????? Brandy? Cher? Pentatonix in FULL? We are so back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cEveryone waits until the end of the parade to see the magical person who\u2019s been around since the dawn of time\u2026.and she came on right before Santa Claus! We love you @Cher,\u201d replied another.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A fourth commented: \u201cEvery single performer at the parade (sic) lip syncs and they always have.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Last month, the \u2018Believe\u2019 singer made headlines after she called for\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0(AI)\u00a0to be made illegal<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0music<\/a> industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After allegedly hearing an AI-generated version of herself covering a\u00a0Madonna<\/a>\u00a0track, Cher told the Associated Press: \u201cSomeone did me singing a Madonna song and it was kind of shocking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThey didn’t have it down perfectly. But also, I’ve spent my entire life trying to be myself, and now these a******s are going to go take it?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAnd they’ll do my acting and they’ll do my singing?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The actor added that she feels as if\u00a0AI<\/a>\u00a0shouldn\u2019t be able to \u2018take away\u2019 art after you have worked hard on it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
