The incident occurred in Omaha, Nebraska, where he and his family had just relocated. It was the summer\u00a0<a class=\"Pe -M\" href=\"https:\/\/armchairexpertpod.com\/pods\/adam-devine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/armchairexpertpod.com\/pods\/adam-devine\">going into sixth grade<\/a>, and he had just made new friends.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"fh\">Young DeVine and his pals were headed to the convenience store when the unthinkable happened. One of his friends yelled, &#8220;Come on!&#8221; and he thought he was giving him the green light to cross the road while pushing a bicycle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"fh\">&#8220;I grew up in the suburbs so new houses were being built every day. His lung collapsed, and doctors considered amputating his legs. His mother was out with her friends at the zoo, and she received a note at the concession stand (he said there were no cell phones at the time) instructing her to call a specific number, and that is how they learned about his hospitalization.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"fh\">Meanwhile, his father was at home asleep after working the night shift. He was called on the home telephone number, but he did not pick up and let it go to the voice machine. However, once he heard what the person on the other end of the phone had to say, he rushed to the hospital to see his son.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"kj\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><iframe src=\"https:\/\/if-cdn.com\/TrYJBo8?_showcaption=false&amp;app=1\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"adv\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"jh\"><strong class=\"dh\">Adam DeVine Underwent over 20 Surgeries &amp; Had to Relearn How to Walk<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"fh\">DeVine revealed he underwent 26 surgeries from 6th grade until his first year of high school. Moreover, he could not walk and\u00a0<a class=\"Pe -M\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2400047903540653\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2400047903540653\">spoke<\/a>\u00a0more about the experience during his appearance on &#8220;The Kelly Clarkson Show&#8221; in October 2019:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"ih\">\n<p class=\"fh\">&#8220;I had to relearn how to walk. [..] And it was a two-year process to gain my strength back in my legs and learn how to walk again. The actor credits the unfortunate incident for getting into comedy. Following the incident, he had to use a wheelchair, and people made fun of him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"fh\">His dad advised him to use words to defend himself since he could not do it physically. He told him to think of funny stuff to say to them.
